HOCKEY PLAYOFFS: Top-seeded Stingers sweep semifinal series from Martlets

MONTREAL – Forward Megan Bureau-Gagnon scored three goals and added an assist as No.2 ranked Concordia skated to a 6-1 triumph over McGill on Saturday to sweep an RSEQ best-of-three semifinal series at Place Bell.

The division-league Stingers, who won the series opener 2-1, advance to play second-seeded Bishop's in the league championship series. BU reached the final by sweeping the third-place Montreal Carabins 3-2 in Lennoxville and 4-3 at the CEPSUM arena.

The lone McGill marker came from the stick of forward Taylor Garcia who received the puck behind the McGill net after passes from Mia Giles and Meganne Chailler, then proceeded to skate the length of the ice on a spectacularly patented "Bobby Orr style", end-to-end goal.

McGill's ability to defend the omnipotent Stingers was hindered by being assessed six of the eight penalties called and the Stingers had a lopsided 31-17 edge in shots. Concordia went 1-for-5 on the power-play, while McGill was 1-for-2.

After a scoreless opening period, the Stingers took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission and then outscored the Martlets 3-0 in the final stanza.

Rounding out the scoring for Concordia was Caroline Moquin-Joubert, Emilie Lavoie and Emilie Lussier.

Stingers netminder Jordyn Verbeek turned aside 16 of 17 shots for the win. For the Martlets, Sophie Lajeunesse made 25 saves in a losing cause. She was making her second consecutive start (and sixth appearance of the season) in the wake of health issues to both Jade Rivard-Coulombe (20 starts) and Sarah Carmichael (9 starts).

Since women's hockey was sanctioned with a national championship in 1997, these bitter rivals have met 165 times overall and McGill's lifetime record now stands at 90-71-5 in 166 games overall against Concordia, including a 12-12 mark in 24 post-season confrontations. In 13 series meetings, the Stingers have a 7-6 edge.

This was the final collegiate game for three Martlets defencemen who are expected to graduate, namely Jaime Kastelic (BA '25), Olivia Pridham (BA '25) and Elizabeth Mura (BCom '25).

Kastelic is a political science senior from Burlington, Ont. A steady, stay-at-home rearguard, she missed only six games over her university career. She finished with three goals, 17 points and 52 penalty minutes in 120 games overall. Pridham is an industrial relations senior from Stouffville, Ont. She has played on defence for McGill over the past four seasons. An alternate captain, Olivia has dressed in 119 games overall and has tallied 11 goals and 33 points, in addition to 50 penalty minutes.Mura is a management senior majoring in accounting. A native of Calgary, Alta., she has patrolled the McGill blueline for the past four seasons. The team captain, she played 115 games overall, with six goals, 30 points and only 16 penalty minutes. Mura also helped Canada win gold at 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, NY.

It was a difficult conclusion to the 130th year of women's hockey at McGill as a young Martlets team was based at Place Bell – located about 45 minutes north of the campus via public transportation – due to major renovations at McConnell Arena. The team roster featured four freshmen, eight sophomores, two juniors and six seniors. They posted a 7-24 record overall, including a 4-15-2 fourth-place finish in the RSEQ conference.
