Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Rearguard Pridham paces Martlets in exhibition setback to Gee-Gees

OTTAWA – Seven different players found the back of the net as Ottawa skated to a 7-4 triumph over McGill in a non-conference women's hockey game played at the Minto Sportsplex, Saturday afternoon.

Ottawa, which had a 28-26 edge in shots, led 3-0 after the opening period, 4-3 after two and outscored the Martlets 3-1 in the final stanza. The setback dropped McGill's head-to-head record to 110-35-7 overall against the Gee-Gees.

This was the first confrontation between these interprovincial rivals since Ottawa left the RSEQ conference to rejoin the OUA league – along with Carleton – at the conclusion of last season. Their last meeting resulted in a memorable 4-3 overtime victory for the Martlets in a Super Bowl Sunday matinee on Feb. 11, 2024.

Naomi Morin, who gave Ottawa a 2-0 lead in the first period, led the Gee-Gees with a goal and an assist. Other Ottawa markers were tallied by Beatrice Bolodeau, Madison Berven, Florence Lessard, Reece Mepham, Gillian Warren and Alyssa Biesenthal.

Senior Olivia Pridham, an industrial relations major from Stouffville, Ont., paced McGill with her third goal of the season and added a pair of helpers.  The veteran rearguard now has 10 goals and 30 points In 108 career contests overall.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was freshman Jordyn Watson of Kingston, Ont., Anika Cormier, a science junior from Ste. Marie de Kent, N.B., and sophomore Syrine Kacem of Quebec City.

Goaltender Mireille Kingsley started for the Gee-Gees and gave up three goals on 14 shots before being replaced at 11:23 of the second period by Clara Grenier who was credited with the win. Grenier turned aside 11 of 12 shots.

Senior Sarah Carmichael of St. Lazare, Que., started for McGill and took the loss, saving 21 of 28 shots.

Both teams came up empty on the power-play, with the Martlets going 0-for-3 and Ottawa going 0-for-2.

It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Gee-Gees, who improved to 12-8 overall. They are 10-6 in OUA play and will resume their OUA schedule against Laurier on Jan. 10.

McGill dropped to 5-14 overall, including 2-8-1 in the RSEQ conference. The Martlets will resume league play on Jan. 12 when they travel to Lennoxville to play Bishop's (5-5-1) in a 3:30 p.m. puck drop at the Jane and Eric Molson Arena.
