MONTREAL – Right-fielder
Adam Gilbert hit a game-winning RBI-single to cash in
William Dupuis with the winning run as the Université de Montréal baseball club rallied from a five-run deficit to score six times in the sixth inning to defeat McGill 8-5, Wednesday.
The game, played at Centre Claude Robillard, marked the season opener for UdeM (1-0), while the Redbirds dropped to 1-1.
McGill, which had an 8-5 advantage in hits, scored a pair of runs in the second inning, then added one in the third and two more in the fourth before the Carabins bats came alive. The home side scored once in the fourth and added another in the fifth, setting the stage for a six-run explosion in their final at bats.
Not one UdeM player had a multi-hit performance but they took advantage of some unconventional McGill pitching, which produced nine walks, two hit batsmen, four wild pitches and one balk.
Catcher
Robert Glusker and designated-hitter
Alessandro Perreault paced the Redbirds offence with two hits apiece. Glusker batted 2-for-4 with a walk, one RBI and one run scored. Perreault was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, and an RBI.
UdeM's
Liam Davies-Forester pitched three innings to collect the win in relief of starter
Luke De Swart. For the Redbirds,
Radbod Yazdanfar was saddled with the loss in relief of starter
Justin Zabudsky, who went four innings, and
Blake Dal Santo.
Montreal (1-0) plays at Concordia (0-1) on Thursday, while McGill (1-1) will now focus on the upcoming Saturday doubleheader against UQTR (0-0), beginning at 12 noon at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc, Que. The Patriotes are the defending Quebec league champions who posted an unblemished 11-0 regular season record last year en route to defeating the Redbirds 2-1 in the league championship series.
