Brad Marelich of Pasedena, Calif., had three hits, four RBIs and scored twice as McGill clobbered Concordia 13-2 to clinch second place in the Quebec University Baseball League at Gary Carter Field, Tuesday.
The result was McGill's 11th win in the last 12 meetings with the Stingers. With one game left in regular season play for the Redbirds, they improved to 7-4 and assured a confrontation the third-place Stingers (4-6) in the QUBL best-of-three semifinals.
McGill, which had a 9-6 edge in hits, showed patience and pop at the plate, eliciting seven walks and a hit batsman. They exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning and added a half-dozen more in the sixth inning before the mercy rule was applied to halt the game.
Marelich, a 21-year-old economics senior, batted 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot The 6-foot-1, 185-pound shortstop batted twice in the first inning. He led off with a double to left and scored the game's first run on an error with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, he stroked a two-run single to centre to put McGill ahead 7-0 before Concordia had their first at bats. Marelich saved his crowning moment for his final plate appearance, a two-run homer to centrefield to put the Redbirds ahead 9-2.
He was one of seven Redbirds to hit safely.

Efrain Romero each went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Southpaw starting pitcher
Nathaniel Factor from Delta, B.C., earned the victory. The computer engineering junior, scattered five hits and two runs over 4.1 innings of work. He struck out six and walked three.
He was supported by relievers
Donovan Worrall, a South African, and
Alastair Mitchell of Chelsea, Que.
Concordia starter
Riley Clahane failed to survive the first inning. he threw 55 pitches and only managed to get two outs, diving up seven runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. he struck out just one batter.
Five Stingers managed hits, led by left-fielder
Jacob Ohanian, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
McGill (7-4) will close out the regular season on Wednesday (Sept. 25) by hosting the cellar-dwelling Universite de Montreal Carabins (1-8) in a 7:30 p.m. start at Gary Carter Field. U de M's only victory this season was an 8-5 shocker over McGill, with a six-run rally in the final inning, on Sept. 4.
