COTE ST. LUC, QUE – Sophomore
Jack Catapano of North Bennington, Vt., had three hits, a pair of RBIs and scored twice to help Concordia rally with nine runs in the final inning for a wild 13-7 victory over McGill in university baseball at Gary Carter Field, Tuesday.
The result was McGill's third straight setback and dropped the second-place Redbirds to 4-4 in the league standings. It also halted a four-game losing streak for the third-place Stingers (2-4) in the four-team Quebec league. Concordia had a 10-7 advantage in hits and was charged with five of the eight errors made in the field. McGill stole seven bases, including a pair of double steals that resulted in home plate being pilfered twice.
One of the few bright spots for the Redbirds was leftfielder
Jonas Press, a political science junior from Toronto, who extended his hit streak to six consecutive contests after a two-run single in the first inning. Batting third in the McGill lineup, he went 2-for-4 at the plate, with an RBI and crossed the plate once. It marked his team-leading sixth multi-hit outing in 12 games overall.
Redbirds catcher
Aidan Grskovic, a senior from Katonah, N.Y., was 1-for-4 at the plate and also extended his hit streak to six consecutive games.
McGill scored twice in each of the first two innings, only to see the visitors bounce back with two in the fourth and another pair in the fifth to create a 4-4 stalemate. But McGill regained the lead in the fifth when second baseman
Daniel Zevnik, a senior from Vaudreuil-Dorion, , Que., stroked an RBI triple.
The Redbirds appeared to be in control heading into the seventh and final inning, needing just three outs for a victory. But the Stingers had other plans and exploded for nine runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to go ahead 13-5. It was the most runs ever conceded by McGill in an inning, surpassing the previous high of eight scored by Carleton in the first inning of a wacky 22-20 decision on Sept. 3, 2023.
Concordia starter
Adrian Cookson threw 122 pitches for a complete-game seven-hitter to collect the win. He allowed seven runs (four earned), walked four and struck out eight. Reliever
Robert Passmore-Waugh, one of five McGill pitchers used in the game, was ineffective and took the loss.
Henri Boudreau started for the Redbirds and gave up four hits and four runs (three earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking none.
McGill will now turn its focus on hosting Académie de Baseball Canada, an elite program more commonly known as "ABC". They will meet in an exhibition game on Friday (Sept. 20) in a 7:30 p.m. start at Gary Carter Field.
