COTE ST. LUC, QC –
Jonas Press of Toronto stroked a two-run homer and scored twice, pacing McGill to a 7-1 victory over Concordia in university baseball action at Gary Carter Field, Tuesday.
It was McGill's second win in as many meetings against the Stingers who are now coached by
Casey Auerbach, the former longtime McGill bench boss.
The Redbirds pounded out a dozen hits –- six of them for extra bases – and committed just one error against the Stingers, who only had four hits and an error. McGill took a 2-0 lead on runs in the first and third innings and Concordia cut the deficit in half during the fourth.
But in the top of the fifth inning, Press, a hulking 6-foot-3, 175-pound first baseman, hammered his two-run blast on a 1-1 count deep over the centrefield wall to give the Redbirds an insurmountable 4-1 lead. The 21-year-old political science junior went 2-for-4 from the third spot in the batting order.
He was one of four McGill batsmen with multi-hit games. Cleanup hitter
Alessandro Perreault and designated hitter
Aidan Grskovic each went 3-for-4 at the plate, with both scoring one run and knocking in another. And third-year centrefielder
Jet Jarvis, the leadoff batter from Wyoming, Ont., was 2-for-3 while crossed the plate twice.
Four different Concordia batters had one hit apiece.
McGill right-handed starter
Gabriel Braun of Georgetown, Ont., went five innings on the mound and collected the win. The fifth-year political science senior allowed one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Rookie reliever
Tate Spencer of Salmon Arm, B.C., tossed the final two innings
Concordia starter
Connor Melanson was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out seven, walked one and hit one batter.
McGill (3-1) is back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 11) when they confront the Montreal Carabins in a 7:30 p.m. start at Parc Claude-Robillard. Concordia (1-2) returns to play on Sept. 12 when they host the defending league champions from UQTR (0-0).
