McGill grad Daoust announces retirement, trades in skates for coach's whistle

MONTREAL – Melodie Daoust, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who had a brilliant hockey career at McGill University and played for Montreal of the Professional Women's Hockey League, is hanging up her skates.
 
The 32-year-old native of Valleyfield, Que., made the announcement Tuesday on the X social media platform previously known as Twitter and said that she would be coaching full-time at Collège Bourget in Rigaud, Que.
 
"I am filled with pride for the milestones achieved and the dreams I was able to make my reality," Daoust wrote. "From the thrill of stepping onto the ice in the inaugural PWHL season to the honour of representing Canada at worlds and three Olympic Games, each moment has left an unforgettable mark on my life."
 
She won gold at the Beijing Winter Games in 2022 and the Sochi Games in 2014, in addition to silver at Pyeongchang in 2018.

"Hockey has been my compass for 32 years, guiding me through life's many twists and turns, reinforcing a work ethic in me that I witnessed every day as a kid from my parents working on our family farm back home in Valleyfield."

A product of Dawson College, Daoust moved up to the university ranks at McGill in 2011-12, graduating in 2017 with a degree in physical and health education. In her sophomore year, she became the first player to win the Brodrick Trophy as CIS hockey player of the year after meriting CIS rookie of the year honours. She served as team captain in 2016-17 and led the Martlets to three RSEQ conference titles and four appearances at the Nationals. Daoust was named three times as the RSEQ conference player of the year and finished her illustrious five-season university career with a 116-156-272 record in 143 games overall. In regular season play, the 5-foot-6 centre had a 71 goals and 168 points in 79 career contests.

A four-time All-Canadian, Daoust also earned Academic All-Canadian status. She was a three-time recipient of the Gladys Bean Trophy as McGill's female athlete of the year and a national finalist for the BLG Award as Canadian university athlete of the year. Daoust led the Martlets to three RSEQ conference titles and four appearances at the Nationals.
 
In 13 games over three Olympics, Daoust tallied four goals and nine points. At the IIHF world championships, she posted a 6-10-16 record in 14 contests. She was named Tournament MVP at the 2021 IIHF championship in Calgary.
 
In 2022, she merited the Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Award, presented by Hockey Canada to an active player (at any level) whose values, leadership and personal traits are representative of all female athletes.
