Hot goalie, cold second period proves undoing for hockey Martlets

OTTAWA – Mahika Sarrazin posted a 36-save shutout and the Ottawa Gee-Gees scored twice in 26 seconds en route to a 3-0 victory over McGill in women's hockey, Thursday, at the Minto Sports Complex.
 
After a scoreless first period, it took just a minute and 26 seconds for Florence Lessard to tally what proved to be the game-winner early in the middle frame. Kate Maclean doubled the score at 2:08 and Alyssa Biesenthal put the game out of reach at 10:19. The third period was scoreless.
 
McGill, which had a 36-32 edge in shots, went 0-for-3 on the power-play and killed off both shorthanded situations.
 
Martlets netminder Sarah Carmichael, a pharmacology junior from St. Lazare, Que., made 29 saves in a losing cause.
 
The result was a second consecutive win after eight straight losses for the Gee-Gees. It was a costly setback for the Martlets, who dropped to 4-14-1 and now sit seven points behind fourth-place Ottawa (6-9-4) in a hunt for the final playoff berth in the RSEQ conference. McGill has six games remaining with one more against the Gee-Gees. The Martlets are 1-3 against Ottawa this season and now hold a lifetime head-to-head record of 109-34-7 overall.
 
McGill now faces a must-win game against fifth-place Carleton (5-12-1) at McConnell Arena on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. Ottawa will travel to Bishop's (11-7-0). on Jan. 28.
