MONTREAL – Five different players scored as No.1 ranked Concordia extended its win streak to 16 with a 5-1 victory over McGill in an RSEQ women's hockey matinee on Sunday. The result put a damper on a Winter Carnival crowd of 403 at McConnell Arena.
The Stingers, who improved to 16-0-0 in league play, outshot McGill 35-18. Concordia was 2-for-6 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-2.
Concordia tallied twice in each of the first two periods before the Martlets responded in the third period to spoil a shutout bid by goaltender
Jordyn Verbeek, who registered 17 saves for the victory.
The lone Martlets scorer was rookie forward
Syrine Kacem, who registered her first career goal only 52 seconds into the final stanza. The science freshman is a native of Quebec City.
Concordia forwards
Kristina Stathas and
Zoe Thibault scored in the first period. Teammates
Rosalie Begin-Cyr and
Emilie Lussier potted the second period markers and rearguard
Sandrine Veillette added one more in the final frame.
Martlets starting goaltender
Sarah Carmichael stopped 15 of 19 shots and was saddled with the loss. She was replaced at the midway mark by Jade Rivard-Coulomb who turned aside 15 of 16 shots.
McGill (4-11-1) sits two points behind both Carleton (5-10-1) and Ottawa (4-9-3), who are tied for the fourth and final playoff berth in the six-team RSEQ conference.
Both McGill and Concordia will return to action on Jan. 19. The Martlets will play at Bishop's (10-6-0) in an 8 p.m. start, while the Stingers play at Ottawa.
