Brilliant Bodine bats in four as McGill conquers Concordia conclusively

COTE ST. LUC, QUE – Chris Bodine of Pound Ridge, N.Y., reached base four times and collected a game-high four runs batted in as the McGill Redbirds spanked Concordia 11-3 in university baseball action at Gary Carter Field, Thursday.

It was the third straight win for McGill and marked a three-game series sweep over the Stingers.

The Redbirds fell behind 1-0 early but rallied for four runs in the first inning and never looked back, scoring once in the second, four times in the fourth and one run apiece in the last two innings.

McGill had their batting gloves tightened to just the right grip, banging out 14 hits, paced by Bodine, Jett Jarvis of Wyoming, Ont., and Sacha Remillard of Lorraice, Que., with three apiece.

Bodine, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound catcher, was 3-for-4 at the plate. The 21-year-old economics senior also drew a walk and had a pair of doubles.

Jarvis, a management senior, went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, walking once and scoring twice.

Remillard, an accounting sophomore who was batting eighth in the order, went hitless but contributed in others ways, with three RBIs, a sac fly and one hit-by-pitch.

Alastair Mitchell, the designated-hitter from Chelsea, Que., batted 3-for-5 with one run scored and a pair of RBIs.

For the Stingers, three different players had one-hit apiece.

Three McGill pitchers combined for a dozen strikeouts over seven innings. Starter Gabriel Braun, a political science sophomore from Georgetown, Ont., collected the win, improving to 2-0. The six-foot, 175-pound right-hander allowed two hits and a pair of runs over four innings. He struck out seven and walked three. Mopping up in relief was Eugene Lee and Justin Zabudsky.

Concordia starter Ryan Bawart took the loss. In two innings, he gave up five earned runs on eight hits, with one hit-batsman and one strikeout.

Seven games overall remain for the Redbirds before post-season play as they improved to 11-3 overall, including a 5-2 mark in the Quebec league. Next on tap for McGill is a doubleheader against the Montreal Carabins at the Centre Claude-Robillard, on Sunday (Sept. 24), beginning at 12 noon.
