MONTREAL – Two McGill University graduates, Jade Downie-Landry and Ann-Sophie Bettez, were among 90 players selected in the inaugural Professional Women's Hockey League Draft on Monday.
 
The 15-round draft was conducted involving all six teams in the newly-former PWHL, with hockey clubs from Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, New York and Minnesota. They chose from a pool of 268 draft-eligible players from the PWHPA, PHF, NCAA, U SPORTS and other international leagues.
 
Downie-Landry was the first of four products selected from a group of Canadian university graduates. She was picked by New York in the ninth round, 52nd overall. Bettez, who has played with the Canadian national team, was selected by Montreal in the 14th round, 79th overall. The dynamic duo were teammates in the pro ranks last year with the Montreal Force of the Premier Hockey Federation.
 
The other U SPORTS grads were two players from the Montreal Carabins, both in the 15th round, with Alexandra Labelle (88th overall) going to New York and Audrey-Anne Veillette (89th overall) heading to Ottawa.

Melodie Daoust, another McGill grad, could easily play in the PWHL, but was denied her compassionate circumstances waiver, and instead chose to pull her name from the draft. The move makes her ineligble for a standard player agreement, but she is eligible to join a team's reserve roster.
 
Downie-Landry, a 27-year-old Dawson College product who hails from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., was named as the McGill female athlete of the year in 2021-22. The 5-foot-9 centre graduated in 2020 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and returned to study physical education, concluding a brilliant university career with 93 goals and 204 points in 165 contests overall. The two-time All-Canadian won the Brodrick Trophy last season as the U SPORTS player of the year.
 
Bettez, a 35-year-old native of Sept-Iles, Que., was recruited out of Dawson College and graduated from McGill in 2011 with a commerce degree, majoring in marketing, entrepreneurship and organizational behaviour. She followed that with a certificate in public relations in 2012. Bettez had a prolific five seasons at McGill, where she merited All-Canadian status each year, en route to tallying 148 goals and 323 points in 196 games overall. She won the Brodrick Trophy in 2012 and was named as the McGill female athlete of the year after concluding her stellar university career as McGill's all-time leader in goals, assists and points. She was inducted to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 20, 2022.
