McGill grad Dick Pound among 2023 inductees to Canadian Squash Hall of Fame


MONTREAL – Richard Pound, a former McGill varsity athlete who competed at the 1960 Rome Olympics, was chancellor at the University and a long-serving IOC member, will be one of four new honourees inducted to the Canadian Squash Hall of Fame on Saturday (May 13).
 
The ceremony will be held at the old Montreal Forum, in conjunction with the Canadian Open squash championships this week.
 
Pound, a long-time Montrealer was born in St. Catharines, Ont.,  and raised in Ocean Falls, B.C. He was a star swimmer at McGill, where he earned a commerce degree in 1962, then returned to help the varsity squash team win the Harald Martin Trophy, symbolic of the Canadian intercollegiate championship in 1966-67 before earning a law degree in 1967. A member of the Jesters Club since 1969, he played for Canada in five Lapham Grant matches and has been a  fierce advocate for squash. Pound was previously inducted to the Canadian Aquatics Hall of Fame (1972), the Quebec Swimming Federation Hall of Fame (1993), the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame (2001), the McGill Sports Hall of Fame (2010) and the Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame (2011).
 
The prestigious squash Hall, which now has 48 laureates, will also honour Lolly Gillen of Toronto, an accomplished player, volunteer, administrator and past-president of Squash Canada; Sabir Butt, a native of Nairobi, Kenya and a four-time Canadian champion who reached a world ranking of No. 17 in 1988; and Vermont-born Jamie Crombie, a former member of the Canadian national team who went on to win 19 Professional Squash Association titles.
 
The ceremonies are scheduled to held at the Jonathan Power All-Glass Show Court, located at the site of the Forum, 2313 rue Saint-Catherine Ouest. Gillen's induction is slated for 5 p.m., followed by Butt (6 p.m.), Crombie (7 p.m.) and Pound (8 p.m.).
