MONTREAL –
Christiana Colizza of the McGill University Martlets, has won the RSEQ women's hockey award for combining sport with academics, leadership and community service.
A 23-year-old native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., whose family now resides in Wendover, Ont., "Chrissy" is currently in her second year of a master's student in kinesiology and physical education after graduating in 2021 with a degree in psychology and life sciences. She merited Academic All-Canadian status, made the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll and was the 2022 recipient of a Jean Béliveau Athletic Award, which
recognizes outstanding McGill student-athletes who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership in student and/or community affairs. She recently received a Scarlet Key Award, presented to McGill student leaders who go above and beyond what is expected of them, showing outstanding dedication to their community and peers.
Off the ice, Colizza serves as president of the McGill Varsity Council, which provides a forum for student-athletes and also organizes community service events in the Montreal area. Colizza has volunteered for numerous causes, including the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorder Alliance, the University's Women in Sport program, the McGill Mental Performance Council and is on the organizing committee of the McGill Athletics major awards gala reception. She was actively involved with a "Motionball" fundraiser in support of the Special Olympics and serves as a tutor on campus, in addition to her role as team captain of the hockey Martlets. She also helped coordinate the hockey team's annual Shoebox Project Game, which benefits homeless women.
On the ice, the 5-foot-3 forward finished second on the team in scoring this season with 13 points, including five goals, in 22 league games. Over her five campaigns with the hockey Martlets, she registered a 31-42-73 overall record in 159 career contests. The seventh member of the Colizza clan to play varsity sports at McGill, she is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier high school who played for the Gloucester Cumberland Stars before enrolling at McGill in 2017.
