BATHURST, AUSTRALIA –
Matthew Beaudet of the McGill University track and field team helped guide Canada to finish eighth of 15 countries in the mixed relay at the world athletics cross-country championships on Feb. 18.
The event was held in 34 C heat and wet terrain with sporadic rain showers in Bathurst, Australia, located about 200 kilometres northwest of Sydney.
Beaudet, a 22-year-old electrical engineering junior from Montreal's NDG borough, led off a four-member relay squad composed of Western's
Kate Current of Cobourg, Ont., Cornell's
Perry MacKinnon of Coaticook, Que., and Olympian
Erin Teschuk, a York University graduate from Winnipeg. Each raced two kilometres and completed the 8k course in a combined time of 24 minutes, 55 seconds. Teschuk, the team's anchor, received the baton in ninth place, and overtook New Zealand's runner in the final lap.
This was the first such world championship since 2019 due the COVID pandemic.
Beaudet, who measures 5-foot-9 and 145 pounds, was the third McGill athlete and the first male to compete for Canada at the world cross-country championships. The previous ones to do so were
Dr. Linda Thyer (MDCM '94) at the 1993 worlds in Spain and
Dr. Sarah Ali-Khan (PhD, '06) at the 2003 worlds in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Beaudet will be competing this weekend at the RSEQ conference track and field championships, hosted by McGill at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Feb. 24-25. He is currently ranked first in the nation among all U SPORTS track athletes in the men's 1500m (3:39.38), fourth in the 3000m (7:59.08) and 15th in the 1000m (2:24.76).
