Gaiters escape with OT shootout win over snake-bitten hockey Martlets

MONTREAL – Jamie Aspropotamitis scored the deciding goal in a post-overtime shootout as Bishop's escaped with a 3-2 victory over McGill in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

It was BU's ninth straight win over the Martlets since a 4-1 McGill victory on Feb. 25, 2022 as they improved to 9-6 overall in 15 meetings since the series between the two clubs was initiated in 2019-20.

The Gaiters jumped into a 2-0 first-period lead with a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart, by defenceman Gabriella Goodall (power-play) and forward Justine Turcotte at 10:24 and 10:56, respectively.

McGill rebounded to force overtime with goals by forwards Sarah-Maude Lavoie (at 19:59 of the second period) and Mika Chang, on a power-play at 5:27 of the final stanza.

McGill appeared to have scored a go-ahead goal with just over five minutes remaining when rookie India Benoit knocked home a rebound from a Lavoie shot but the referee lost sight of the puck and whistled down the play an instant before the puck crossed the goal line.

After a pair of sudden-death five-minute overtime periods, the shootout featured eight shooters before the Gaters prevailed.

Bishop's had a 32-25 edge in shots, including a lopsided 18-1 margin in the first period. The Gaiters converted one of five power-plays, while McGill was 1-for-7.

Goaltender Charley Wing was credited with the victory, turning aside 23 of 25 shots in 70 minutes of play. McGill starter Jade Rivard-Coulombe saved 22 of 23 but was forced to leave at the 3:27 mark of the first period for equipment repairs. She was temporarily relieved by Sarah Carmichael, who was beaten on her first shot but rallied to kick aside the next seven shots during her stint, which lasted 6:57.

Both teams are done for the semester, with McGill returning to action on Jan. 6 in Ottawa (4-6-3). Bishop's (8-5-0) will resume play on Jan. 6 with another road trip to Montreal (7-3-2), where they will confront the Carabins (7-3-2).
