MONTREAL – Forward
Ariane Gagne of Rimouski, Que., scored the game-winner midway through the first period and goaltender
Lauren MacKay posted a 17-save shutout as the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees blanked McGill 2-0 in a women's hockey home opener at McConnell Arena, Thursday.
MacKay's name was listed on the official scoresheet, but for some unknown reason, the freshman from Greely, Ont., wore a uniform with the name of teammate
Sarah Howell.
The Gee-Gees maintained their 1-0 advantage after two periods and that stood until the dying seconds, when defenceman
Maelle Laplante iced the contest with a shorthanded empty-netter at 19:52.
The game featured 13 minor penalties and the Martlets went 0-for-5 on the power-play, while Ottawa was 0-for-8. The eight kills was the most in a game by McGill since erasing eight of nine shorthanded situations in a 2-1 loss to Montreal in the RSEQ conference finals on Mar. 3, 2013.
The Gee-Gees had a 23-17 advantage in shots and McGill rookie netminder
Jade Rivard-Coulombe made 21 saves in a losing cause.
McGill, which has dropped six consecutive games to the Gee-Gees, now holds a lifetime head-to-head record of 108-32-7 overall with Ottawa.
McGill (1-2-0) will play at Carleton (0-2-0) on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., while Ottawa will host Bishop's (1-1-0) on Oct. 29.
