Marelich perfect at the plate as baseball Redbirds clobber Stingers in playoff opener

COTE ST. LUC, QUE – Brad Marelich scored three times and Jonas Press had three runs batted in as McGill clobbered Concordia 11-1 in the first game of a doubleheader to open the Quebec university best-of-three semifinals at Gary Carter Field, Saturday.

The Redbirds scored early and often, outhitting Concordia 13-1. McGill led 4-0 after the first inning and 6-0 after two. Both teams added a run apiece in the fourth and McGill exploded for four additional runs in the sixth.

Marelich, a junior shortstop from Pasadena, Calif., went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and a walk.

Press, a sophomore left-fielder from Toronto, batted 2-for-4 and crossed the plate twice.

The dynamic duo was among five Redbirds to have multiple hits in the contest, a group that included seniors Jett Jarvis, Chris Bodine and Brandon Kim, with two apiece.

McGill starter Gabriel Braun left after four innings with a no-hitter in hand and improved his season record to 3-0 overall. The six-foot, 175-pound right-hander from Georgetown, Ont., threw 75 pitches and struck out five, allowing one run, with a pair of walks and three hit batsmen.

Reliever Nathaniel Factor pitched the final two innings, walked three, struck out two and allowed the lone Concordia hit, a two-out double to right-field in the top of the fifth inning. That play ended the inning as Matthew Fletcher, who had drawn a two-out walk, was thrown out at the plate by Marelich, who relayed a throw from right-fielder Alessandro Perreault, to catcher Chris Bodine.

Concordia starter Milo Auslander-Padgham took the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks in two innings.

McGill can sweep the series with a win in Game 2 of the doubleheader at 3 p.m. Righty Marcus Dela Cruz (1-1) is slated to start on the mound for the Redbirds against Concordia's Nathan Lavoie.
