MONTREAL –
Emilie Lavoie tallied twice as defending conference champion Concordia defeated McGill 4-1 to open the RSEQ women's hockey season at the Ed Meagher Arena, Thursday.
The Stingers, who had a 38-14 edge in shots, led 2-1 after the opening period and 4-1 after two. The third period was scoreless.
The game was delayed nine minutes at 10:29 of the final stanza when McGill sophomore
Sarah-Maude Lavoie was injured after being cross-checked to the ice near the Concordia endzone boards by Stingers defender
Ani Robinson. Lavoie was sent to the hospital for a precautionary evaluation. Only a cross-checking minor was called on the play.
Concordia netminder
Jordyn Verbeek made 13 saves for the win. Her shutout bid was spoiled by Martlets forward
Mika Chang, who tallied a power-play goal at 12:42 of the middle period, narrowing the gap to 3-1. It was the third career goal for Chang, a bioengineering junior from Toronto, who has now tallied once in each of her three seasons.
But the Stingers restored their three-goal cushion minutes later when
Emilie Lavoie notched her second of the soiree at 16:45.
Concordia had taken a 2-0 lead in the first frame on goals by
Jessymaude Drapeau at 4:01 and Lavoie at 16:44. The other Stingers marker was scored by
Chloe Gendreau, whose PP marker gave Concordia a 3-0 advantage at 11:19 of the middle stanza.
McGill freshman goalie
Jade Rivard-Coulombe was credited with 34 saves in a losing cause.
Concordia was 1-for-2 on the power-play, while the Martlets went 1-for-4. The Stingers return to play on Oct. 14, when they head south of the border to play an exhibition game at Harvard.
McGill (0-1) will have a week to prepare for the next game, a short jaunt around the slopes of Mt. Royal to confront the Montreal Carabins (0-0) at CEPSUM Arena on Oct. 20 in a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. The Carabins will open their schedule at Ottawa on Oct. 13.
