McGill hockey grad Downie-Landry named among U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians

(VERSION FRANCAISE CI-DESSOUS)

MONTREAL – Jade Downie-Landry, a forward with the Premier Hockey Federation's Montreal Force who starred for the McGill University Martlets, is among eight student-athletes named on Tuesday by U SPORTS as the Top 8 Academic All-Canadians for 2022.

The elite group, nominated for excellence, both on and off the field of play, will be recognized on Thursday by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, governor general of Canada, at Rideau Hall in the nation's capital.

Among the more than 4,900 student-athletes who achieved Academic All-Canadian status in 2021-22, one female and one male student-athlete from each of the four U SPORTS conferences were selected to make up the Top 8. To qualify, they must have maintained an average of 80 per cent or better over the school year while competing for one – or more – of their university's varsity teams.

Downie-Landry, becomes the 23rd student-athlete in 29 years selected from McGill to represent the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec since this program was initiated in 1994.

She will represent the RSEQ conference, along with Laval track and field star Jean-Simon Desgagnés. Laureates from the maritime-based AUS are Shae Demale of Saint Mary's and Alex Carson from Dalhousie. The OUA honourees are Carleton's Raphaël Garcia and Western's Kate Current. Rounding out the group, from the Canada West conference, are Calgary's Eric Lutz and Rebecca Smith.

Currently leading the Force in scoring with a 6-10-16 record in 13 games, Downie-Landry capped her storied collegiate career at McGill last season by winning the Brodrick Trophy as the U SPORTS women's hockey player of the year. A two-time All-Canadian, she led the country in scoring last year, amassing 27 points, including 14 goals, in just 15 games. She won the Gladys Bean Trophy as the McGill female athlete of the year, was voted a Quebec league all-star for the third time and was named Tournament MVP at the 2019 U SPORTS national championship. She concluded a brilliant university career with 93 goals and 204 points in 165 contests overall.

Downie-Landry, who hails from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., achieved a grade point average of 3.93 last year (out of 4.00) and earned a spot on the Dean's Honour List. She is currently completing a degree in physical and health education after graduating in 2020 with a bachelor of arts. She won the faculty's A.S. Lamb award as well as another scholarship for future teachers from the Québec Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité Sociale.

In the community, Downie-Landry participated as a volunteer in various causes, including The Shoebox Project, a non-profit organization that collects donations and health care items for women's shelters in the Montreal area. She has also been involved in campaigns to raise mental health awareness, as well as the team's annual 'Pink in the Rink Game' to raise support for breast cancer research.

The Governor General's Academic All-Canadian Commendation was founded in 2013 by the Right Honourable David Johnston, former governor general of Canada – who previously served as principal at McGill – and was the first to honour Canada's Top 8 student-athletes.

See below for brief profiles of the 2022 Top 8, as well as an all-time list of laureates dating back to 1994.
