Track team’s Danson wins gold and bronze to lead Redbirds at Sherbrooke Invitational

SHERBROOKE – Sebastian Danson of Toronto, led the McGill University men's track team with gold and bronze medal finishes at the Sherbrooke Invitational meet at the Pavillion Univestrie on Saturday.

It was the second meet of the indoor season – the first official league competition – and the Redbirds produced six podiums, with one gold, a pair of silvers and three bronzes.

Laval registered 133.5 points to finish first of nine schools Sherbrooke was second with 102.5 points, followed by McGill (88), Montreal (71), UQTR (21), Concordia (17), UQAC (14), Carleton (14) and UQAM (5).

Danson, a 5-foot-10, 150-pound middle distance runner, led the 4x400m relay squad to victory in three minutes, 28.13 seconds. The 21-year-old computer science senior also claimed bronze in the 600m sprint, crossing the finish line in 1:21.87, about two seconds off the school record of 1:19.47.

Joining Danson on the relay squad was leadoff runner Markus Geiger, a management junior from Toronto, Jules Barrieu, a physics senior from Manhattan Beach, Calif., who ran the third leg and Montrealer Alexander Crooks, an economics freshman, in the anchor slot. Crooks also produced a bronze medal effort in the long jump with a distance of 6.15m.

McGill's silver medal finishes went to Jack Stanley of Victoria, B.C., and Mackenzie Stathis from Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Que.

Stanley, a second-year doctorate student, ran the 3,000m in 8:32.35, which was shy of his seasonal best (8:26.46). Stathis, a computer science junior, cleared a height of 1.90m in the men's high jump.

The other bronze medal finish was by Jerome Jacques, a science freshman from St. Lambert, Que., in the 3,000m (8:50.24).

Next on tap is the Middlebury Winter Classic on Jan. 21, followed by the McGill Team Challenge, slated for Jan. 27-28 at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, located inside the Currie Gymnasium.
