POTSDAM, NY –
Elizabeth Mura of the McGill Martlets set up Canada's third goal in a 4-0 victory over Slovakia to open the FISU World University Games women's hockey tournament at Maxcy Ice Arena, Thursday, on the campus of SUNY Potsdam..
It was the first career point in international play for Mura, a defensive defenceman from Calgary, Alta., who has three assists in 22 games overall this season for the Martlets. The 19-year-old management sophomore set up a third-period goal by
Shae Demale of the Saint Mary's Huskies to put Canada ahead 3-0.
Mura, who wore jersey No. 3, played 24 shifts for a total of 16 minutes, 40 seconds, which ranked fourth in ice time played among the Team Canada blueliners. While playing for Canada, she is slated to miss four McGill games, including Thursday's (Jan. 12) home encounter with the Montreal Carabins, plus
Madison Willan of the Alberta Golden Bears had opened the scoring, with what proved to be the winning goal at 2:52 of the first period. After a scoreless second frame,
Celine Frappier of the Toronto Varsity Blues made it 2-0 at 7:16 of the third stanza. Demale put the game out of reach with 4:05 remaining and only 20 seconds later,
Audrey-Anne Veillette of the Montreal Carabins tallied the final marker.
Canada's second game is set for Saturday, Jan. 14 against Czechia.
The tourney's preliminary round is being played in Potsdam, N.Y., while the medal round will occur at Lake Placid's Olympic Center 1980 Rink. Also known as the FISU Winter Universiade, Canada won silver at the 2019 Games in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, falling 2-0 to the host Russians in the gold medal game.
