Swimmer Secchi and hockey's Downie-Landry named McGill athletes of the year

MONTREAL – Swimmer Clement Secchi and hockey player Jade Downie-Landry were named male and female athletes of the year, respectively, at the 44th annual McGill University varsity sports awards gala, held Wednesday at Le Balcon, an intimate music hall venue located in downtown Montreal.

Secchi, a 21-year-old management senior from Aix en Provence, France, and Downie-Landry, a 26-year-old physical education senior from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., were also named as their team MVPs. They received the D. Stuart Forbes and Gladys Bean trophies, respectively, as the student-athletes who brought most credit to the University by reason of their athletic achievements.

Secchi , who became only the second male from a Quebec institution to be named U SPORTS swimmer of the year, previously won the Forbes Trophy in 2019 and 2020. He earned All-Canadian honours after winning four gold medals and a pair of silvers at the Nationals and becomes the first male to merit McGill athlete-of-the-year honours three times.

Downie-Landry, an All-Canadian who led the nation in scoring with a 14-13-27 record in only 15 games, became the fifth member of the McGill women's hockey program to win the U SPORTS hockey-player-of-the-year award.

It marked the 16th time in school history that a member of the swim team had won the Forbes Trophy and the 12th occasion that a hockey player took home the Bean Award.

Among the other laureates was hockey team captain Samuel Tremblay, a 26-year-old master's student in kinesiology from St. Basil le Grande, Que., and swim team captain Nikki van Noord, a 23-year-old engineering senior from Hudson, Que. They merited the Richard Pound and Muriel Roscoe trophies, respectively, awarded to the graduating male and female athletes for proficiency and leadership in athletics over their university careers.

Swimmer Elizabeth Ling, who hails from Calgary, was a double award recipient. She took home the Uldis Auders Memorial Trophy as the top sophomore, in any sport, who best combines academic excellence with athletic prowess. Ling, an RSEQ conference all-star who won a bronze medal at Nationals, was also named as the University's female rookie of the year. The 20-year-old civil engineering major achieved a 3.57 cumulative grade-point average (out of 4) to qualify for the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll

Distance runner Matthew Beaudet, a native of Montreal's NDG borough, received the University's male rookie-of-the-year award. The 22-year-old electrical engineering sophomore earned All-Canadian status in cross-country and became only the third male in Canadian university history to earn national rookie-of-the-year honours in both track and cross-country.

The Teddy Smith Award, which recognizes outstanding volunteer work within the McGill Athletics community, went to rugby team captain Evelyn Silverson-Tokatlidis, a 22-year-old international development studies senior from Toronto.

The men's swim program received the Martlet Foundation Trophy as the varsity team of the year. They won three of five meets overall -- including the Quebec league title -- and finished third of 23 teams at the U SPORTS national championship. They broke a plethora of records and qualified a school record 18 men for Nationals, where they produced six All-Canadians en route to winning four gold medals, a pair of silvers and two bronzes.

The men's rugby squad took home the Harry Griffiths Trophy, awarded to the top team in a sport outside the jurisdiction of U SPORTS. They posted a 6-2 record overall, including a 5-1 second-place finish in the RSEQ conference, and generated more than $30,000 during a one-day, McGill-24 fundraiser.

Tribute was also paid to McGill's 13 All-Canadians, 73 conference all-stars and four league championships won during the 2021-22 varsity season. RSEQ conference banners were captured in both men's and women's swimming, along with men's basketball and women's volleyball.

Secchi broke the national championship meet record in the 50m (23.05) and 100m (50.99) butterflys. He set conference records while winning the 200 butterfly (1:54.61) and the 4x100 freestyle relay (3:14.37). His silver medal performances were also Quebec league records, in the 200 freestyle (1:44.71) and the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:14.45).

GLADYS BEAN TROPHY (FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR):

Jade Downie-Landry
(hockey)

Downie-Landry earned All-Canadian status for the third time and received the Brodrick Trophy as U SPORTS women's hockey player of the year. A 5-foot-9 centre from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., she won the RSEQ scoring title and led the nation in both goals (14) and points (27) in only 15 games. The 26-year-old physical education senior either assisted or scored on 50 per cent of McGill's 54 regular season goals and led the Martlets to a first-place regular-season finish in the RSEQ conference. Downie-Landry tallied four power-play markers, two game-winners and a hat-trick.  In her junior season, she was named Tournament MVP at the U SPORTS championship in Charlottetown and became the sixth member of the Martlets to have their jersey on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The team captain, she finishes a brilliant university career with 93 goals and 204 points in 165 contests overall.

RICHARD W. POUND AWARD (PROFICIENCY & LEADERSHIP OVER McGILL CAREER):

The award recognizes the involvement, determination and constant striving of Quebecers who have had a positive influence, either in their community or in the province. Last December, Tremblay was a recipient of McGill's Jean Béliveau Athletic Award, which recognizes outstanding student-athletes for leadership in the community. He is also a past recipient of the Martlet Foundation's 1938 Champions Award for combining leadership with athletic performance and academic proficiency.  Over his six years at McGill, the forward tallied 43 goals and 79 points in 131 games overall. Tremblay is expected to graduate with his second degree this spring after previously earning a degree in 2020, majoring in kinesiology. He made the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll and qualified for Academic All-Canadian status with a perfect grade-point average of 4.0.

MURIEL V. ROSCOE AWARD ( PROFICIENCY & LEADERSHIP OVER McGILL CAREER ):

She has also taken a leadership role in numerous other projects, including social media initiatives and served as a coach with the Masters Swim Club.

MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD:

Matthew Beaudet (cross-country, track & field)

A native of Montreal's NDG borough, Beaudet received the University's male rookie-of-the-year award. The 22-year-old electrical engineering sophomore, who had his freshman year wiped out by the pandemic, earned All-Canadian status in cross-country and became only the third male in Canadian university history to earn national rookie-of-the-year honours in both track and cross-country. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner qualified for nationals in both sports, finishing seventh in cross-country and fourth in track, where he broke a 25-year-old school record in the 1500m, posting a time of 3:50.64 to erase the previous McGill mark of 3:52.00, which had stood for 25 years since being set by Alex Hutchinson in 1997.

Instead of going home each summer, she remained in Montreal, worked at the McGill Summer Sports Camp and was a campus tour guide for prospective students. In her third year, she was elevated to the Varsity Council's executive, serving in a role of vice-president, varsity affairs. As a senior,  she was elected president of the group and served two terms, through both years of the pandemic. During a challenging and difficult period, one of the many areas that she focussed on was connecting to students and making them feel included in other ways, through social media accounts such as Instagram and through the Black Lives Matter movement.
