CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - Goaltender
Elise Hugens blocked all 25 shots faced as the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds blanked McGill 4-0 in a consolation semifinal at the 2022 Cavendish Farms U SPORTS women's hockey championship, Saturday.
The Thunderbirds advance to the consolation final for fifth place on Sunday morning, while the Martlets were eliminated from the tournament after dropping both of their games, including a 5-4 shootout heart-breaker to UNB in Thursday's opener.
Shay-Lee McConnell got the scoring started 6:15 into the first period when she put away a wrist shot while falling. Six minutes later,
Rylind MacKinnon buried a rebound off
Ireland Perrott's shot to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes.
Ashley McFadden extended the lead early in the third period when she poked home a shot that bounced off goaltender
Tricia Deguire at 1:46. Mia Bierd then put the game away with a wrist shot at 10:53.
The Nike Top Performer, player-of-the-game awards went to
Elise Hugens (UBC) and
Christiana Colizza (McGill).
Deguire turned aside 29 shots in the loss, her final game for the Martlets after a brilliant five seasons. She posted a 91-57-1 record in 154 games overall, with 30 shutouts, a 1.90 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage.
Deguire is among five seniors expected to graduate, a group that includes team captain
Jade Downie-Landry, the U SPORTS player of the year, who finishes a brilliant career with 93 goals and 204 points in 165 contests overall.
Two other fifth-year seniors who have worn the Red and White uniform for the last time are F
Marika Labrecque (BEd '21; Certif. in Management '22) and F
Stephanie Desjardins (BA '22).
Labrecque scored 106 career points, including 35 goals, in 131 games overall, while Desjardins had 27 goals and 55 points in 131 contests.
Two other seniors are expected back, include forwards
Laura Jardin (BSc '22), and
Christiana Colizza (BSc '21), a fifth-year student who is now in a master's program with one more year of varsity eligibility remaining.
McGill, which finished second in the 2019 national tournament, has only been eliminated in a consolation final once before (Calgary in 2016) over their 20 appearances at the U SPORTS tourney. The Martlets end their season with an overall record of 19-10-0, including a 12-3 first-place finish in the RSEQ conference.
