McGill's Downie-Landry voted player of the year as four Martlets named among hockey all-stars


MONTREAL – Jade Downie-Landry of the McGill Martlets has been voted player of the year in RSEQ women's university hockey.
 
The 5-foot-9 centre from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., won the RSEQ scoring title and led the nation in scoring with a 14-13-27 record in only 15 games. A 25-year-old physical education senior, she either scored or assisted on 50 per cent of McGill's 54 goals during the regular season. Downie-Landry tallied four power-play markers, two game-winners and had one hat-trick. A two-time All-Canadian prior to this year, she earned RSEQ first-team all-conference honours for the third consecutive season after making the U SPORTS all-rookie squad in 2016-17.
 
Downie-Landry was joined by linemate Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., and McGill goaltender Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., on the first squad, while Martlets rearguard Elizabeth Mura, a freshman from Calgary, made the second squad. Mura also made the all-rookie team.
 
Labrecque finished second in the RSEQ scoring race and fourth in the country with 23 points in 15 games, including a country-leading18 assists.
 
Deguire led the nation in both goals-against average (1.00) and save percentage (.931). She played in 13 of McGill's 15 games, posting a 10-3 record with a pair of shutouts.
 
Mura tied for the team points lead by a defencemen, with eight, including a power-play goal in 15 games. A mainstay on the blueline, she only took two minor penalties.
 
Other major award recipients included Concordia's Emilie Lavoie (rookie of the year), Brigitte Laganiere (leadership award) and Julie Chiu (coach of the year).
 
Laganiere, a defenceman, also earned first-team all-star status, along with teammate Stephanie Lanlancette, a forward, and Ottawa Gee-Gees defenceman Christine Deaudelin.
 
Joining Mura on the second-team all-stars was defenceman Audrey Gervais of the Montreal Carabins, along with Concordia forwards Marie Pascale-Bernier, Audrey Belzile and Rosalie Begin-Cyr.
