MONTREAL – A dozen student-athletes from McGill University were among 187 scholarship recipients as $333,000 was handed out at the Aléo Foundation sports awards gala, Tuesday.
The event, hosted by
François-Étienne Corbin of Réseau des sports, was presented in collaboration with RDS and took place at the Maison du loisir et du sport, headquarters for the RSEQ conference. It marked the first official function under the rebranded Aléo name of the organization, formerly known as the Quebec Foundation for University Athletics.
Distance runner
Matthew Beaudet, who hails from Montreal's NDG borough, won a $2,000 Molson-Coors academic excellence bursary. The 22-year-old electrical engineering junior was an All-Canadian with both the track and cross-country teams last year.
Christiana Colizza, captain of the Martlets hockey team and president of the McGill Varsity Council, received a $2,000 Gildan leadership award. Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and raised in the Ottawa area, she is the seventh member of the Colizza family to become a McGill varsity athlete.
Four McGillians took home an Aléo special bursary, valued at $2,000 each, for student-athletes who began their post-secondary career at an institution outside of the province but have returned to study and compete in Quebec.
That group was highlighted by football's
Benjamin Labrosse, an All-Canadian defensive back from Greenfield Park, Que., who transferred to McGill from Syracuse. The others included track and field's
Donna Ntambue of Montreal, a transfer from Northeastern, along with two soccer players,
Sophie Guilmette of Ahuntsic, Que., a transfer from Vanderbilt, and
Marques Antoine of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., who previously played at Temple University.
Six McGill freshmen were among 35 recipients of a $10,000 recruitment bursary, spread over five years, sponsored by the Quebec government. Among them was football quarterback
Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald, a Montrealer who was recently crowned U SPORTS rookie of the year.
Other honourees include soccer's
Chloe Renaud of St. Hubert, Que., basketball's
Stephy Tchoukuiegno of St. Laurent, Que., and hockey players
Mathieu Gagnon of Gatineau, Que.,
William Rouleau of St. Basil de Portneuf, Que., and
Sarah-Maude Lavoie of Victoriaville, Que.
Aléo also announced 26 CEGEP recruitment bursaries, sponsored by RDS. valued at $3,000 over three years.
"We're thrilled to introduce our new identity – and what better time to do so than at our annual CEGEP and university bursary awards ceremony," said
Patricia Demers, executive director of the Foundation. "A total of 187 students are now benefiting from this program – the majority of them for multiple years. We're also excited to confirm our commitment to support them financially as well as in their life paths, through our personalized approach."
