Gaiters double down on hockey Martlets as semester draws to a close

LENNOXVILLE, QUE. – Neleh Vigneault-Sargeant of Dartmouth, N.S., registered a natural hat-trick, including the game-winning tally, as Bishop's skated to a 4-2 victory over visiting McGill to close out the fall semester in women's university hockey, Sunday, at the Jane and Eric Molson Arena.

It was the third consecutive win for Bishop's, which upset No.1 ranked Concordia 5-3 in Montreal on Friday.

The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after the opening period and 2-2 after two.

Vigneault-Sargeant put the Gaiters ahead 2-1 on a power-play at the 19-minute mark of the first period, then broke the stalemate just 86 seconds into the final stanza and added an insurance marker five minutes later with another power-play goal.

Quynn Campbell, a management junior from Toronto, had given the Martlets a 1-0 lead with a power-play marker midway through the first stanza.

But BU evened the count when defender Marie-Camille Theoret countered at the 19-minute mark with and extra attacker.

Defenceman Olivia Pridham, a sophomore from Stouffville, Ont., regained a one-goal advantage for the Martlets on another power-play early in the second period.

Senior Christiana Colizza, the McGill captain from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.,  set up both Martlets goals.

The Gaiters had a 33-30 edge in shots as rookie goaltender Faith Miller made 28 saves in her first career start for the victory. McGill sophomore Sarah Carmichael was credited with 29 saves in a losing cause.

The Martlets were 2-for-5 on the power-play, while Bishop's went 2-for-4.

Both teams have a one-month break for exams and holidays before play resumes in the new year. McGill (0-12-1) will resume play on Jan. 6 when Carleton (4-7-2) will visit McConnell Arena. That same night, Bishop's (8-2-3) travels to Montreal to confront the Carabins (8-2-3).
