Redbirds soar past U de M in big baseball blowout

MONTREAL -- Freshmen Jonas Press and Brad Marelich each had three runs batted in as McGill blitzed the Universite de Montreal baseball club at the Centre Claude Robillard, Wednesday.

It was the fourth consecutive win and the 12th victory over the past 13 games for McGill, which improved its record to 16-5 overall.

The Redbirds scored early and often, until the mercy rule was applied after the fifth inning. It was McGill's highest offensive output since a 19-3 decision over Concordia on Oct. 1, 2018.

McGill tallied four times in each of the first two innings, then put up a three-spot in the third and added four more in the next inning before U de M broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth,

It was a field day for McGill batters who pounded out 15 hits.

Press, a native of Toronto, batted 2-for-2, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and scored twice. Marelich, who hails from Pasadena, Calif., was 2-for-4 and crossed the plate three times.

Leadoff hitter Jett Jarvis of Petrolia, Ont., scored four times, registered a game-high three hits in four trips to the plate, including a pair of doubles.

Other multi-hit efforts were produced by Milo Young (2/3, 1 BB, 2 RBIs, 3 R), Sacha Remillard (2/3, 1 BB, 2 RBIs) and Aidan Grskovic (2/4, 1 RBI).

Four different players had one hit apiece for U de M.

McGill starter Marcus De La Cruz was credited with the victory. In three innings of work, he conceded a pair of hits, struck out four, walked none and hit one batter. Eugene Lee and Platon Leftakis mopped up in relief.

Starter Luis-Simon Chiasson took the loss for Montreal. In three innings, he allowed three runs on five hits, struck out two, walked three and hit one batter.

McGill (15-6) will travel to Trois-Rivieres, Que., on Oct. 6 to play a doubleheader against College Lafleche, before hosting Concordia (Oct. 7) and Academie de Baseball du Canada, more commonly known as ABC, on Oct .8.
