COTE ST. LUC, QUE – Pitcher
Arthur "Cinch" Smith of Chandler, Ariz., tossed a complete game five-hitter as McGill clobbered Concordia 8-1 for a doubleheader sweep to capture the Quebec university baseball finals at Gary Carter Field, Saturday. Earlier in the day, the Redbirds won the best-of-three series opener 4-0.
One of the highlights of McGill Homecoming Week, it was a fitting end to the season after two years off during the pandemic. The Redbirds concluded their stellar season with a four-game win streak and a 21-8 record overall.
The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after the first inning but McGill added a pair of runs in the fourth and exploded for five more in the sixth.
Smith, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander who won five of his last six starts, allowed only one run, struck out five, walked three and hit one batter. The 20-year-old environmental studies sophomore faced eight batters over the minimum, throwing 91 pitches, 56 of them for strikes.
Right-fielder
Will Bompey of New York City, sparked McGill's offence with three RBIs. The history freshman reached base three times, batting 1-for-2 at the plate, with a pair of walks, and one run scored.
Other multi-hit performances for the winning side came from the bats of centrefielder
Jett Jarvis (1/4, 1 BB, 2R, 2RBI) and leftfielder
Jonas Press (2/3, HBP, 2 RBI).
The Redbirds could lose as many as five seniors, all of them infielders, to graduation, although they all have eligibility remaining. That group includes
Milo Young (industrial relations),
Auguste Guern (political science),
Carlos Vallejos (economics) and the aforementioned
Matthew Rachman.
