HOCKEY (w): Dominating Downie-Landry double dips as Martlets master Montreal

MONTREAL – Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., scored the tying goal and tallied the only marker in a post-overtime shootout, as No. 1 ranked McGill edged the Montreal Carabins 2-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

The Martlets extended their win streak to eight and improved to 11-2 overall, including a perfect 6-0 in regular season play.

"It was a good character win for us," said Martlets head coach Alyssa Cecere, whose team had to bounce back from an early 1-0 deficit when Carabins forward Amelie Poire-Lehoux scored a mere 29 seconds after the opening faceoff.

Martlets fifth-year goaltender Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., responded by playing like an impenetrable fortress after the Carabins lone marker, blocking 30 consecutive shots.

"Tricia was very strong between the pipes today," Cecere said of her 5-foot-10 netminder who leads the Quebec conference in both goals-against average  (1.00) and save percentage (.967). "She is great at remaining calm and her teammates feed off of it."

Downie-Landry, a 26-year-old physical and health education senior, tied the score at 1-1 with a power-play marker on a 5-on-3 advantage at 7:05 of the third period. Drawing assists on the play was Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., and Christiana Colizza from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

"Jade had a really good game," said Cecere of the McGill captain, who followed up with a show-stopping shootout goal to secure the win. "She has been solid for us, is a leader and a great performer."

The 5-foot-8 centre leads the RSEQ conference scoring race with 12 points, including five goals, in six games.

McGill had the upperhand on special teams, going 1-for-7 on the power-play and killing off all three shorthanded situations. The Martlets lead the league in both categories with a 35.7 per cent success rate on the PP and a 95.2 on the PK.

Montreal outshot McGill 31-23 and Aube Racine, the veteran Carabins goalie, made 21 saves and was saddled with the loss.

Including a pair of preseason meetings, McGill is now 3-1 against the Carabins, including back-to-back shutouts. The Martlets owns a 57-30 overall record in 87 lifetime confrontations since Montreal initiated their program in 2009.

Next weekend, McGill (6-0-0) will make the short trip down Sherbrooke street, to play cross-town rival Concordia (3-2-1) in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Ed Meagher Arena on Friday, Nov. 19. The same evening, Montreal (1-4-0) plays host to Bishop's (1-4-0).
