Laval swept all three podium spots en route to wrestling the Quebec conference crown away from McGill, the defending champions. Leading the way for the Rouge et Or was
Jessy Lacourse, who completed the eight-kilometre circuit in a gold-medal winning time of 28 minutes, 43 seconds. Joining her on the podium were Laval teammates
Catherine Beauchemin (28:53) and
Jade Berube (29:37).
Fleurent-Gregoire, a 24-year-old master's student in nutritional science, paced the Martlets, crossing the finish line in 30:30. Other McGill teammates in the scoring included senior
Maia Watson (12th, 31:01) of Victoria, B.C., senior
Meggie Dargis (17th, 31:24) of Trois-Rivieres, Que., sophomore
Katherine Brown (22nd, 31:53) of Calgary, and
Emma Betty (29th, 32:17), a sophomore from Ottawa.
The race's top seven finishers earned first-team all-conference honours, while the next seven qualified for RSEQ second-team status. So McGill's Fleurent-Gregoire earned a first-team nod, while Watson, a 21-year-old environmental science major, made the second team.
Laval scored 19 points in the team standings to capture the Quebec conference championship. The Montreal Carabins were second with 64, followed by McGill (82), UQAM (112), Sherbrooke (124), UQTR (159) and Concordia (211).
McGill will return to Quebec City in three weeks when Laval plays host to the U SPORTS national championship meet, an 8k race slated for Nov. 20.
