MONTREAL –
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., posted a 33-save shutout as the McGill University women's hockey team spoiled a splashy regular season home opener for the Montreal Carabins, Friday, cruising to a 5-0 victory at the CEPSUM Arena.
The Martlets took a 1-0 lead into the final stanza, then exploded for four goals. But the star of the show was Deguire, a 5-foot-8 senior who stood tall as McGill weathered the storm, being outshot 33-22. Deguire has now blanked the Carabinsin in back-to-back contests, including 15 saves in a 2-0 preseason victory on Oct. 24. She has 28 career shutouts in 135 games overall for McGill.
Sparking the offence was the tandem of
Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., and
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean, Que. Both veterans scored once and added a pair of helpers.
Christiana Colizza of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., was credited with the game-winner midway through the first period. That held up until the final stanza.
Laura Jardin, a senior from Calgary,  started the third-period onslaught with a goal at 1:43, followed three minutes by Labrecque, who made it 3-0 at 4:49.
Makenzie McCallum of Morden, Man., connected on a power-play at 13:07 of the final frame to out the game out of reach and Downie-Landry iced it three minutes later.
The Martlets went 1-for-1 on the power-play and erased all four shorthanded situations. Including preseason meetings with the Carabins, McGill has taken two of three confrontations and now owns a 56-30 overall record in 86 lifetime meetings since Montreal initiated their program in 2009.
