Dominant Downie-Landry deadly, sparks hockey Martlets to conquest over Carleton

MONTREAL – Sniper Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean, Que., collected a pair of goals and added an assist as sixth-ranked McGill defeated Carleton 3-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena on Sunday.

The hosts improved their lifetime head-to-head record to 102-5-1 in 108 matchups against the Ravens.

McGill, which improved its record to 10-5-4, dominated the shots on net tally by a 41-20 margin and accomplished all of their scoring within an eight-minute frame in the second period.

"It was the kind of game we needed to play and overall it was a good team effort. I especially liked our second period," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith, whose side showered Carleton with 22 shots in the middle frame.

After sitting out an automatic one-game suspension for a penalty incurred last week, Downie-Landry opened the scoring at 6:32 of the first on the power-play, assisted by Olivia Ramos and Shana Walker. The psychology senior then doubled McGill's lead barely five minutes later on a breakaway, with a shorthanded effort that proved to be the game-winner.

McGill's special teams continued firing as Stéphanie Desjardins, an industrial relations junior from Grand Falls, N.B., increased the lead to 3-0 on the power play at 14:15 of the middle frame. Downie-Landry earned an assist on the play along with forward Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que. The assist for Dumais upped her season points total to 16 in 18 games, surpassing her previous personal best of 15 points set last season .

Downie-Landry's three-point soiree improved her team-leading tally with 17 points, including eight goals. Despite missing four games this season, she sits third on the RSEQ scoring leaderboard, trailing the Concordia duo of Claudia Dubois (12) and Rosalie Bégin-Cyr (14).

Hannah Dinovitzer, from Ottawa spoiled the shutout bid by Martlets netminder Tricia Deguire with a power-play marker of her own at 9:18 of the final period. But Carleton offered little else as the team mustered only six shots on the net in the final 20 minutes.

Deguire, a 5-foot-8 senior from Sherbrooke, Que., made 19 of 20 saves as her record improved to 10-7. The kinesiology major leads the league in goals-against average (1.76), save percentage (.935) and minutes played (1055:13).  Marie-Ève Côté took the loss for Carleton and was beaten three times on 41 shots as her record dropped to 2-9.

McGill was 2-for-6 on the power play while the Ravens went 1-for-4. The Martlets rank first among the conference's five teams in both PP percentage (22.6) and penalty-killing at 89.3 per cent.

Ten penalties were called, seven of which came in the action-packed second period.

With one game remaining, McGill can finish anywhere from second to fourth. The first tie-breaker in the RSEQ conference is most wins, followed next by head-to-head records. The Martlets sit second in the Quebec conference with a 10-5-4 record, six points behind division-leading Concordia (14-3-2) and three points in arrears of both the Montreal Carabins (8-5-5) and Ottawa (10-7-1).

McGill will visit the Carabins on Friday for a Valentine's Day clash at CEPSUM Arena in a 7 p.m. start. The Martlets are 3-1 against UdeM thus far, losing the first meeting 3-1, followed by three straight victories (4-1, 3-2 and 3-2), with the latter two needing overtime and double overtime to determine a winner.

Carleton (4-12-2), which is already eliminated from post-season contention, will play Concordia on Feb. 14 before closing out its schedule against Ottawa on Feb. 16.
