TORONTO – A foursome of varsity sports teams from McGill University is listed in the U SPORTS national Top 10 this week. The two swim teams, fresh off winning the Quebec conference banners over the weekend, are ranked third on the men's side and seventh in the women's division. Joining them are both hockey teams, with the Martlets being listed sixth in the nation, while the men's squad is back and listed at No.10.
The women swim squad pulled off a stunning victory to capture their first conference banner since 2012, the men won their first title since 2018 and together, the two squads combined for the overall championship for the first time since 2004. It was only the third triple sweep of the
RSEQ banners in school history, with the previous ones occurring in 2001 and 1999.
Ten McGill records fell at the meet and the two McGill teams combined for 14 gold medals. All gold medalists automatically earn RSEQ all-star status and qualify for Nationals. Over the season, 17 men and 10 women have qualified for the U SPORTS national championship meet in Victoria, Feb. 20-22.
In women's hockey, the Martlets moved up one spot in the rankings with a 9-4-4 record after upsetting Montreal with a 3-2 overtime victory last Friday to take over sole possession of second place in the Quebec league. This week, they will play at division-leading Concordia on Feb. 8, before hosting Carleton on Feb. 9. Both are 3 p.m. starts.
In men's hockey, McGill crept back into the Top 10 after extending their win streak to four with a pair of road victories, a 6-3 decision at Nipissing and a 6-1 result at Laurentian. McGill has finally moved into third place in the OUA East with a 16-8-2 record. They will close out the regular season with a pair of home games this week, against UQTR (Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.) and Ontario Tech (Feb.8 at 4 p.m.).
In men's wrestling, the
Brock Badgers are once again the national standard. The Badgers reclaimed their spot as the top-ranked team in the nation, after joining the women's squad in sweeping the OUA championship banners in Guelph over the weekend. It was the fifth straight title for the Brock men, and sixth for the No.1-ranked women, who dominated the competition winning 10 of 19 gold medals.
The Badgers will now prepare to host the U SPORTS wrestling championships Feb.21-22 in St. Catharines.
