VICTORIA, BC – The McGill University swim team concluded their most successful season in decades with two gold medals, a pair of silvers, one bronze, two school records and a meet record at the U SPORTS national swim championships, a three-day competition held at Saanich Commonwealth Place over the weekend.
Peter Carpenter of Pointe Claire, Que., merited the Fox 40 national men's coach-of-the-year honours, for the second time in three seasons. He guided McGill to a sweep of the Quebec conference championships, while qualifying 17 men and 10 women for nationals, where McGill finished fourth of 23 schools on the men's side and seventh in the women's division.
The men's squad, which won four medals for the first time since 2010, was buttressed by
Clement Secchi, a 19-year-old management sophomore from Aix-en-Provence, France. He earned first-team All-Canadian honours with a pair of gold medals and one bronze while accounting for an impressive 135.5 points or 39.4 per cent of the team's scoring. The 5-foot-10 sprinter set a championship meet record with his gold medal performance in the 50m backstroke, clocking in at 25.82 seconds. He also struck gold in the 100 butterfly (53.55) and helped the 4x100 freestyle relay win bronze in 3:27.42. Secchi reached the finals in seven events, including three fourth-place results (50 fly, 100 back, 4x100 MR) in addition to a fifth-place finish (4x200 free).
On the women's side, the Martlets were paced by
Daphne Danyluk of Rivière des Prairies, Que., who merited second-team All-Canadian status and became the first member of the Martlets to be named U SPORTS female rookie of the year. A 21-year-old science freshman majoring in anatomy and cellular biology, the 5-foot-7 sprinter competed in seven events, won silver in the 50m backstroke (28.99) and tallied 119.5 points to account for 34.8 per cent of the team points total. Danyluk also posted three fourth-place finishes (100 back, 200 back, 4x100 medley relay), was sixth in the 200 butterfly, eighth in the 4x200 freestyle relay and 11th in the 4x100 free.
The McGill team had four podiums on the first day and added another on Day 3 with a silver-medal performance in the 50 breast from
Brian Yu, a physical education freshman from Beijing.
Other medalists from McGill included the men's 4x100 freestyle relay, which won bronze and featured
William Simpson of Kingston, Ont., in leadoff, followed by the aforementioned Secchi,
Brandon Freiberger, an engineering senior from Ladner, B.C., and
Marius Collin, an architecture junior from France, who swam the anchor leg.
Over the three-day meet, all schools combined for three pool records, three short-course records (from the morning prelims) and 11 U SPORTS championship meet records (long-course records from the evening finals), including one by Secchi in the 50m backstroke.
New McGill standards were established in the men's 200m freestyle (
William Simpson) and the women's 100m butterfly (
Grace Valihora).
Simpson, a psychology senior, registered a school record time in the 200 freestyle prelim, touching the wall in 1:48.43, erasing his old short-course standard of 1:48.72. He qualified for the long-course final and finished eighth in 1:54.52.
Valihora, an arts sophomore from Toronto, broke her school record in the prelims of the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:01.60 to better the previous best of 1:02.22, set in 2018 by
Cecile Wiederkehr. Valihora qualified for the consolation final, where she was fifth.
UBC captured the men's team title for the fourth consecutive season with 1,087 points, followed by Calgary (873), Toronto (765), McGill (343.5) and Ottawa (515.5), to round out the top five. The UBC women tallied 1,092.5 points to top the leaderboard, followed by Toronto (978.5), Calgary (864), Victoria (552.5), Montreal (499), Ottawa (377) and McGill (343.5).
Team scoring is based on points earned by qualifying for the A, B and C finals. All prelims were swam in a short course pool (25m), which are eligible for school records, while the finals each evening were held in a long course pool (50m), which don't count toward school records.
