Deguire delivers goose egg as hockey Martlets ransack Ravens nest

OTTAWA -- Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., posted a 21-save shutout as No. 7 ranked McGill blanked Carleton 4-0 in RSEQ women's hockey, Friday, at the CU Ice House.

It was the fourth win in five games for McGill, which improved to 8-4-3 and moved into sole possession of second-place, one point ahead of the Montreal Carabins (7-4-4) with five games left before playoffs. The Martlets also improved their lifetime head-to-head record to 101-5-1 in 107 matchups against the Ravens.

McGill outshot Carleton 34-21, including a 14-8 margin in the middle period.

"We played a solid game tonight, a good 60-minute game. When you have two games on the weekend like this you have all four lines going, all six defencemen and we showed good pace and tempo," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, whose troops will be staying overnight in the nation's capital to play the Gee-Gees in a Saturday matinee. "Carleton is not an easy team to play against, they are in your face the whole time and I thought we played with good discipline."

McGill went 2-for-4 on the power-play and killed off all four penalties taken.

It was the fourth shutout of the season for Deguire, who improved her record to 8-6, lowered her goals-against average to 1.65 and enhanced her league-leading save percentage to .938. The 22-year-old kinesiology senior now has 24 career goose-eggs in 121 games overall.

"Tricia was solid, she made saves when we needed them and it was nice for her to get that shutout," noted Smith.

McGill forwards Stephanie Desjardins and Jade Downie-Landry each registered a pair of goals, with the latter also collecting an assist.

Desjardins, who hails all the way from Grand Falls, N.B., scored what proved to be the game-winner on the power-play at 18:03 of the opening period, then added another marker at 16:08 of the third to make it 3-0. The 5-foot-4 junior has now tallied three goals and six points in 15 regular-season games. In three seasons, the 20-year-old industrial relations junior has 21 career goals and 39 points in 94 contests overall.

Downie-Landry, from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., put McGill ahead  2-0 on the power-play at 15:37 of the middle period, and rounded out the scoring with seven seconds remaining in the final stanza.  The 5-foot-9 psychology senior ranks fourth in the conference scoring race, with 13 points, including six goals, in 11 regular-season games. She now has 149 career points -- 65 of them goals --  in 128 games overall.

"Jade is playing really solid, doing it all, 5-on-5, the kill, and the power-play," said Smith, of his star centre who now has tallied 12 points in her last six games after a slow start to the season. She missed four games in the first semester due to an early season injury.

West-Island Duo Lea Dumais and Kate Devries were the only other Martlets on the scoresheet, collecting three and two assists, respectively.

Carleton netminder Alexandra Lehmann blocked 30 of 34 shots and took the loss as her record fell to 2-4.

McGill will play the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the Minto Sports Complex in a 2 p.m. start. Carleton, which sits fifth in the league with a 4-8-2 record, hosts the No. 1 ranked Concordia Stingers (12-1-2) on Sunday, Jan, 26 at 7 p.m.
