OTTAWA --
Tricia Deguire posted a 24-save shutout and
Jade Downie-Landry tallied three points as visiting McGill cruised to a 5-0 whitewash over Carleton in women's hockey action, Saturday, at the CU Ice House.
The result avenged a 4-3 loss to the Ravens at McConnell Arena on Nov. 11 and gave McGill two victories in three meetings against Carleton this season, improving their lifetime head-to-head record to 100-5-1 in 106 matchups.
The Martlets dominated the first period with a 20-4 advantage in shots and finished the game with a 37-24 edge.
"The girls came to play today, they were focused and gave Carleton the respect they deserve," said Martlet bench boss
Peter Smith whose squad was playing for the second time in 24 hours after a 3-2 double overtime victory against the third-ranked Montreal Carabins the night before. "Even though we played back-to-back games we still kept the pace up, had five different goal scorers, went 2-for-5 on the power play and our penalty kill was perfect."
It was the third shutout of the season for Deguire, who improved her won-loss record to 6-5, lowered her league-leading goals-against average to 1.40 and enhanced her save percentage to .948, which ranks fifth in the nation. The 22-year-old kinesiology senior now has 33 career goose-eggs in 108 games overall.
Downie-Landry, who put McGill ahead 4-0 with an unassisted effort at 1:06 of the third period, added a pair of helpers. Despite missing four games with an early season injury, the 5-foot-9 senior from St. Jean, Que., has now taken over the team scoring lead with a 3-5-8 record in eight contests.
Kellyane Lecours of Victoriaville, Que., opened the scoring at 9:31 of the first period, which proved to be the game-winner. Forward
Marika Labreque netted a power-play marker at 11:40 giving McGill a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Makenzie McCallum, a science freshman from Morden, Man., then registered her third goal of the regular season to make it 3-0 at 7:34 of the middle period.
Lea Dumais rounded out the scoring at 15:21 of the final stanza with her team-leading sixth marker of the season. The senior from Beaconsfield, Que., has 40 career goals and 67 points in 133 games overall.
Carleton netminder
Marie-Eve Cote blocked 32 of 37 shots and took the loss as her record fell to 2-6.
Both teams have a week off before returning to the ice next on Jan. 18. Carleton (3-7-2) will host the Montreal Carabins (6-3-2) at 1 p.m., while the Martlets (6-3-3) will faceoff against No. 1 ranked Concordia (10-0-1) at McConnell Arena, in a 3 p.m. puck drop
