Gritty Gaudioso great as McGill baseball extends win streak over Concordia to 17


COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Michael Gaudioso had a pair of hits and knocked in two runs, including the game-winning RBI, as McGill routed Concordia 7-1 in university baseball action at Gary Carter Field, Wednesday.

It was McGill's 17th straight win over their cross-town rivals and their first meeting since a 13-6 McGill victory at the CCBA national championship tournament last October.

McGill, which had an 8-4 advantage in hits and a 5-1 margin in errors, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. They added a pair of runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth before Concordia stopped the bleeding. The Stingers scored in their final at bats to spoil the shutout bid.

Gaudioso, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound catcher, went 2-for-4 from the fifth spot in the batting order. The engineering sophomore from Livingston, N.J., stroked an RBI double to right-field in the fourth inning that cashed in Jared Kersh with the winning run and produced another run in the fifth with a fielder's choice to make the score 4-0.

Teammates Charles Winans and Nick Linton also had productive days at the plate, with two hits apiece. Winans scored twice and stole three bases, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Linton was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Relief pitcher Zach Salsburg-Frank, one of five McGill hurlers to see duty, collected the win He came into the game in the third inning and faced eight batters, allowed one hit and one hit batsman, wile registering one strikeout.

Starter Benji Kaiserman lasted only two innings. He threw 31 pitches, allowing no runs on a pair of hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Stingers starter Alexi Deschened took the loss. He lasted three innings, allowing three runs on five hits, three walks and one hit batter.

Concordia (1-3) is off until a rematch with McGill on Sept. 11.

Before then, McGill (6-3) has a doubleheader at Queen's on Sunday (Sept. 8) beginning at 12 noon. Both games are scheduled for Magaffin Park in Kingston, Ont.
