SHERBROOKE --
Elizabeth Hirsch posted a silver-medal finish as the No.4-ranked McGill University women's cross-country team captured the Sherbrooke Invitational meet on Saturday.
It was the second victory in as many meets for the Martlets, who also claimed the season-opening McGill Open on Sept. 13.
Hirsch, a 5-foot-7 distance runner from Melrose, Mass., has now struck gold and silver in her two meets. She completed the six-kilometre course on the Sherbrooke campus in 24 minutes, 16 seconds, behind Laval's
Jessy Lacourse, who finished first of 71 runners in 24:12. Rounding out the final podium spot was
Elodie De Coene of the Montreal Carabins, who was clocked in 24:20.
McGill placed women in second, fourth, sixth, 10th and 12th, to scored a combined 34 points. They finished ahead of the Montreal Carabins (63), Laval (63), UQTR (100), Sherbrooke (116), UQAM (153) and UQAC (193).
Other scorers for the Martlets included
Sandrine Veillette (4th, 24:46),
Mary Hnatyshyn (6th, 24:51),
Denbeigh Whitmarsh (10th, 25:40) and
Brianna Mendes (12th, 25:47).
On the men's side of the draw, Laval swept five of the top six spots to win 8k race with 18 points. Sherbrooke was second (64), followed by Montreal (86), McGill (98), UQTR (109) and UQAC (171).
The podium featured Laval's
Jean-Simon Desgagnes -- who was first of 70 entries in 27:34 -- and
Charles Paquet (27:42), along with Sherbrooke's
Thomas Windisch (27:52).
The McGill scores were
Henry Wellenstein (14th, 29:07),
Gift Marshall-Burghardt (15th, 29:46),
Thomas Csisztu (20th, 30:22),
Olivier Cyr (22nd, 30:45) and Jake McClure (29th, 31:21).
The third event in the six-meet schedule is the Capital Challenge in Ottawa, Oct. 5.
