Gentleman Gaudioso galvanizes gregariously as baseball boys bounce Stingers

COTE ST. LUC, QUE -- Catcher Michael Gaudioso of Livingston, N.J., registered three runs batted in and scored another as McGill mastered Concordia 7-2 in men's university baseball at Gary Carter Field, Wednesday.

The win, which  improved McGill's record to 10-5 overall, was their 18th victory in the last 19 games against their cross-town rivals.

McGill, which had hits from six different players, jumped into a 4-1 first-inning lead and never looked back. Concordia narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the fourth but McGill put the contest out of reach with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Gaudioso, an imposing 6-foot-3, 220-pound clean-up hitter, reached base three times, going 1-for-2 at the plate, was a hit by a pitch and drew one walk. The 19-year-old engineering sophomore keyed a four-run explosion in the first inning with a bases-loaded single to centre that drove in the first two runs.

Other offensive contributors included first-baseman Emerson Dohm, who went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a pair of runs scored and right-fielder Jonathan Duforest, who went 1-for-1, was hit three times and came around to score once.

Reliever Benji Kaiserman registered the win for McGill in relief of starter Zach Finkelstein. Kaiserman surrendered one run on three hits and a pair of walks over 1.2 innings. Finkelstein, who threw 51 pitches, surrendered one run on four hits over three innings, striking out three and walking one along with one hit batsman. Teammate Zach Salsburg-Frank also threw 2.1 innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Stingers starter Sam Brochu took the loss. He surrendered two runs on two hits over four innings, striking out two, walking one and hitting one.

Concordia collected seven hits, led by Stefan Brady and Jarod Pita, who each collected two hits apiece

Both teams will head into southern Ontario this weekend for a four-game excursion. McGill (10-5) is slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday against Wilfrid Laurier in Brantford, followed by another twin-bill on Sunday, against the Warriors in Waterloo. Concordia (3-4) plays the same teams in reverse, opening against Waterloo (Sept. 21) and closing their road-trip at Laurier (Sept. 22).
