Martlets blank defending national champs in rematch of gold medal game

MONTREAL – Amanda Hadwen of Ottawa posted an 18-save shutout as the McGill women's hockey team blanked the defending national champion Guelph Gryphons 3-0 at McConnell Arena in preseason action, Sunday.

It avenged a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Gryphons in their previous meeting, at the gold medal contest of U SPORTS Final Eight tournament last March.

With No.1 goaltender Trisha Deguire away in Calgary on a Canadian national team call-up to their Fall Festival training camp in Nova Scotia, Hadwen stepped in between the pipes, to earn her first start and win of the campaign. It was the second whitewash in 16 career contests for the 5-foot-7 neurological science junior.

Senior Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., found the back of the net off a Jade Downie-Landry feed to open the scoring at 16:25 of the first period. Only 16 seconds later, senior Cassidy Bell of Fort St. John, B.C., made it 2-0, converting passes from veteran Olivia Ramos and sophomore Laura Jardin.

A scoreless second period kept the visitors' hopes alive but at 6:30 of the third,  Kellyanne Lecours scored to dash any hopes of a Gryphons comeback.

"I thought we played well on Friday and today's game was even better," said head coach Peter Smith whose troops have now outscored opponents 7-1 in their two preseason contests. "That's what you want at this time of the year. Every period, every game to get a little better. Its nice to be able to say 'I thought we had a 60-minute game today.' "

Guelph (1-1) plays at Waterloo on Sept. 19, while the Martlets (2-0) now head west along HWY-20 to Toronto where they will face Queen's in the Old Four Tournament at Varsity Arena on Friday Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.
