TORONTO -- Starting pitcher
Thomas Mienkowski struck out nine and allowed just one hit as the McGill University baseball team defeated St. Clair College 6-2, Saturday, to salvage a doubleheader at Dan Lang Field on the University of Toronto campus.
In the earlier game, U of T rallied with three runs on a bases-clearing double in the final inning to edge McGill 6-5.
The Saints, who won silver last year at the national college baseball championship, led 1-0 after the first inning but McGill rallied with six consecutive runs, including two in the second, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Mienkowski, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander from Toronto, went six innings and threw 101 pitches. The economics senior allowed one run, a pair of walks and hit three batters.
Pierre-Olivier Avoine, a native of Val d'Or, Que., and first-year transfer from Galveston College,
threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last three outs to earn the save.
First baseman
Jared Kersh of South Salem, N.Y., was the only McGill player to register a multi-hit performance. Batting from the No.3 spot, he had three hits in four at bats. Four of his teammates were credited with a run batted in, including the aforementioned Avoine, plus
Milo Young,
Noah Campo and
James Mulvaney.
Barrios started and took the loss for the Saints. He allowed four hits and two runs over three innings, striking out four and walking three.
McGill, which had a 7-3 edge in hits, scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Young and a bases-loaded walk by Avoine. They pulled away for good with three runs in the fifth inning, keyed by an RBI groundout by Mulvaney, an error by pitcher Gosselin and a wild pitch.
Now with a 5-2 record on the season, McGill will close out their four-game road-trip with a rematch against St. Claire at Dan Lang field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
