Downie-Landry named Team MVP as award winners announced for hockey Martlets

MONTREAL -- Forward Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean, Que., was named most valuable player and also took home the most outstanding scorer trophy as the McGill University women's hockey team held their annual awards gala at McConnell Arena's Alumni Lounge, Wednesday.

Another double award recipient was senior rearguard Emilia Cotter of Toronto, who was chosen as the team's most outstanding defenceman, in addition to sharing the most dedicated player award with team captain Alison MacKenzie of Osgoode, Ont.

Rounding out the laureates was freshman forward Valerie Audet from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., who received rookie-of-the-year honours and sophomore goaltender Amanda Hadwen of Ottawa, Ont., named as the team's most improved player.

The soirée was capped off with a tearful tribute to the aforementioned MacKenzie, 22, who was the Martlets' only graduating player. The fifth-year atmospheric science senior was presented with her game jersey, a framed photo and a bouquet of flowers. A 5-foot-5, defensive defenceman renowned for strong leadership skills, MacKenzie played 175 career contests over five seasons and posted a 1-15-16 record with 46 penalty minutes. Her lone goal occurred in a victory at Dartmouth on Oct. 15, 2017.

Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 centre who earned All-Canadian honours, was named tournament MVP at the U SPORTS national championship. She led the team in points with a 13-32-45 record in 35 games overall. In regular season play, she won the conference scoring title with a 5-18-23 record in 20 contests. A 23-year-old psychology junior who serves as one of the team's alternate captains, Downie-Landry either scored or assisted on 45 per cent of McGill's 51 goals in league play, establishing career highs in both assists and points. She struck for three game-winners and one insurance goal.

Cotter, a 21-year-old science senior majoring in kinesiology, was one of only four players to dress in all 37 games and was penalized only five times. The 5-foot-7 defenceman scored three goals and 11 points.

Audet, a 21-year-old science freshman majoring in nursing, made the conference's all-rookie team. She finished third among the league's rookie scoring leaders with 10 points in 20 games, including six goals. The team's only newcomer to suit up for every game, Audet registered an 8-11-19 record in 37 contests overall. She had no penalties and tallied four power-play goals along with three game-winners.

Hadwen, a 5-foot-11 netminder, saw duty in five games behind starter Tricia Deguire, but there was no dip in the stats department. The 19-year-old neuroscience sophomore posted a 2-1 record with one shutout, a stingy 0.65 goals-against average and a stellar .976 save percentage.

The keynote speaker was Jordanna Peroff, originally from Keswick, Ont., who played five seasons for the Martlets and won three national championships before graduating with a BA in 2012. She spoke eloquently to the current team about how one grows from taking on challenges and stepping out of their comfort zone.

Among the other alumni spotted at the event was Katia Clément-Heydra, Gabrielle Davidson, Adrienne Crampton, Michelle Daigneault, Amey Doyle, Chantal Gauvin, Chelsey Saunders, Gillian Merrifield, Joanne Cagianos and Alyssa Cecere.

The 2018-19 season was a great rebound year for the Martlets, who bounced back from a 16-21-0 record last season to post a 23-13-1 record overall and surprise the field by winning silver at the U SPORTS Final Eight national championship tournament in Charlottetown.
