U SPORTS HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP: McGill topples Tommies in quarter-final opener

Box Score
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Lea Dumais registered a hat-trick, while linemates Kellyane Lecours and Jade Downie-Landry tallied five points apiece as fifth-seeded McGill toppled the AUS champion St. Thomas Tommies 10-2 in quarter-final play at the U SPORTS women's hockey national championship on Friday.

The Martlets, who had blanked St. Thomas 2-0 in preseason play, advance to Saturday's semifinal round, where they will take on top-seeded Alberta -- which edged Toronto 3-2 earlier in the day -- in a 6 p.m. (Eastern) start at MacLauchlan Arena.

The 10-goal outburst was McGill's largest offensive output in 54 lifetime games played at the nationals, surpassing their previous high of eight, accomplished three times. The last time that McGill scored that many goals in any game was a 10-0 regular-season win over Carleton on Feb. 13, 2015. And the last occurrence in post-season play was a 10-2 playoff decision over Concordia on Feb. 23, 2014.

McGill, which improved to 22-12-1 on the season overall, used a balanced attack to upend the Tommies, who fell to 27-12-0. The Martlets had a 45-29 advantage in shots on goal and went 2-for-4 on the power-play. St. Thomas was 1-for-4 with the extra attacker but gave up a shorthanded goal.

"We've been here before and it is often the case where both both teams are a little nervous to get started," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "There was lots of nervous energy but we settled in pretty quick.... We did a good job in supporting the puck. played with speed and made smart decisions."

Dumais, who finished with a four-point soiree, now has six goals in five post-season contests and a team-leading 21 markers in 35 games overall. She was aided by Lecours (2-3-5) and Downie-Landry (1-4-5). Rounding out the McGill scoring was Valerie Audet of St. Bruno, Que., with a pair, including the game-winner, while defenceman Emilia Cotter of Toronto and forward Shana Walker of North York, Ont., added one each.

"We had a lot of energy coming into this game and all four lines contributed," said Dumais, a 5-foot-6 management junior from Beaconsfield, Que., whose three-goal performance was her second of the season and McGill's first at nationals since Melodie Daoust potted a hat-trick in an 8-2 win over Calgary on March 12, 2015. "Everyone's just working hard and giving their best effort out there."

McGill, the Quebec conference finalists, came out flying and made an early case as one of the strongest-looking teams through the four quarter-final matchups. In Thursday's quarter-final round, Guelph had edged Manitoba 3-2 and Montreal blanked host UPEI 3-0.

The Martlets took the lead just 6:42 into the opening period when Cotter wired a seeing-eye shot through a forest of legs past goaltender Abby Clarke, who was screened on the play.

About three minutes later, the Tommies' formidable duo of Emily Oleksuk and Lauren Henman connected on a goal – something they've done a lot of this season. Oleksuk skated in from the right and centred it to Lauren Henman, who tapped it home.

However, the Martlets continued to attack with ferocity and made a usually-stable Clarke appear uncomfortable. With just under five minutes to go in the frame, Lecours bounced a puck off the end boards to Downie-Landry, who fed the puck in front to Dumais for a  nifty goal.

Minutes later, senior Nicole Howlett of Tsawwassen, B.C., fired a shot off the netminder and Audet buried the rebound to give McGill a 3-1 advantage after 20 minutes.

Just four minutes into the middle period, Lecours snapped a shot from the centre of the left circle to extend McGill's lead to 4-1.

McGill followed that up with a power play goal midway through the period when Audet sniped her second of the game from the high slot to make it a commanding 5-1 advantage. St. Thomas responded 25 seconds later with a power play goal of their own, as Megan Pardy fired it past goaltender Tricia Deguire.

But the Martlets again countered in a big way, potting three goals in a span of 3:31. First it was Dumais at 13:09, followed by Walker at 13:51 and then Dumais again, who completed the hat trick with a roof shot from the side of the net at 16:40. McGill took an 8-2 lead into the intermission.

"I owe it all on my teammates, I don't think it was an individual effort at all," Dumais said. "Anyone could've won player of the game and everyone worked very hard to get the win."

At 9:28 of the final period, Lecours took a feed from Downie-Landry and wristed the puck past Taylor Cook, who had replaced Clarke after the eighth goal. Then Downie-Landry closed out the scoring six minutes later with a shorthanded marker on a breakaway.

Deguire, a kinesiology junior from Sherbrooke, Que., kicked aside 27 of 29 shots for the win, improving her lifetime record to 57-37-1 in 99 career contests for the Martlets.

Clarke took the loss for the Tommies, conceding eight goals on 34 shots in 36 minutes and 40 seconds. Cook, her understudy, was beaten twice on 11 shots.

Looking ahead, the Martlets now have to contend with the Alberta Pandas and their top-ranked defence in Saturday's semifinal. The last time that these two rivals met was in the 2017 national championship gold medal game, a 2-1 upset for Alberta in double overtime.

"We have to use our speed, build off this energy and do what we've been doing all year," noted Dumais.
