No.8 Stingers Purchase win over No.4 McGill in Sherbrooke Street rivalry

MONTREAL -- Goaltender Katherine Purchase of Halifax, N.S., posted a 30-save shutout as the No.8 ranked Concordia Stingers pulled off a 1-0 squeaker over fourth-ranked McGill in an RSEQ women's hockey matchup between the two Sherbrooke Street rivals at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

McGill, which has dropped three straight and now sit at 11-6-0 in league play, wore pink uniforms as part of their annual Shoot for the Cure game, which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer. With the result, Concordia (10-4-3) leap-frogged over McGill and moved into second place in the Quebec league standings. They improved to 45-85-3 in 133 meetings overall with McGill since 1997.

"We played a solid 60 minutes, both teams played well," said McGill bench boss Peter Smith. "I was happy the way we played, disappointed we didn't come out on top but you can't win a game if you don't score a goal."

McGill had a 30-27 edge in shots, including a 13-6 effort in the third period.

Concordia forward Audrey Belzile of St. Hyacinthe, Que., pounced on a turnover in the Mcgill zone and promptly potted the lone goal of the game at 11:26 of the middle period.

The Stingers were 0-for-2 with an extra attacker, while the home team was 0-for-1.

McGill netminder Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., saved 26 of 27 shots through 58:33 as her record dropped to 11-6. Purchase, her Concordia counterpart who sat out the first semester with an injury, improved to 5-1.

"We had one mistake and it was on the goal against, but it was not Tricia's fault," noted Smith. "She was outstanding."

The Stingers (10-4-2) travel to Ottawa (5-11-0) on Thursday, Feb. 7, to play a rescheduled league game postponed by a snowstorm on Jan. 20.

McGill (11-6-0), which has three games remaining -- all at McConnell Arena -- will host Ottawa and Carleton on Feb. 9 and 10, respectively, before their regular season finale against the Carabins on Feb. 15.
