HOCKEY PLAYOFFS: Martlets rally stuns second-seeded Stingers in series sweep

MONTREAL -- Kellyane Lecours of Victoriaville, Que., scored twice and Lea Dumais netted the winner with only 2:19 remaining as No. 6 ranked McGill rallied from a 3-0 deficit to stun No. 5 ranked Concordia 5-3 in an RSEQ women's hockey thriller to sweep the best-of-three semifinal series, Saturday, at McConnell Arena. McGill also surprised the Stingers 6-2 in the opener on Thursday.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Martlets who advance to the best-of-three championship series for the Dr. Ed Enos Cup in addition to meriting a berth at the nationals. McGill will meet their long-time rival Montreal Carabins, who swept Ottawa with identical 4-0 wins. Both Quebec finalists will be traveling to Charlottetown, P.E.I., for the U SPORTS Final Eight tournament, March 14-17.

Concordia led 1-0 after the opening period and had built up a shocking 3-0 edge midway through the second which chased starter Tricia Deguire for the first time in her three seasons at McGill. The Martlets, who outshot the Stingers 28-26, regrouped and scored five unanswered goals. It was believed to be the largest deficit overcome in team history.

"I've coached a lot of games and can't remember a time where we've scored five unanswered goals after being down by three, especially in a big game like that, It showed a lot of character," said head coach Peter Smith who improved his career record to 509-214-33 in 756 games overall with the Martlets.

Concordia forward Claudia Dubois opened the scoring at 10:45 of the first, followed by second period markers from Rosalie Begin-Cyr at 5:01 and Maria Manarolis and 9:57.

Sophomore netminder Amanda Hadwen was sent out to do damage control and she blanked the Stingers the rest of the way, making a dozen saves.

Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., initiated the comeback at 15:32, sending McGill into the intermission trailing 3-1.

Lecours, an education sophomore, scored back-to-back markers in the third period at 4:44 and 14:43 to tie the game at 3-3.

"Kellyanne's hockey sense is off the charts, I've coached a lot of players and she ranks right up there in terms of her vision on the ice and her ability to get to the net," noted Smith. "I thought it really showed in Game 1 on Thursday and today that she was a force out there, with or without the puck."

Dumais, a 5-foot-6 junior from Beaconsfield, Que., then put McGill ahead 4-3 with the game-winner at 17:41 of the final stanza.

Martlet defenceman Emilia Cotter from Toronto, Ont., added an empty-netter at 19:42 to settle the score. It was just the third career goal in 138 games overall for the senior, who has now tallied twice in three games.

McGill went 0-for-1 on the power-play but killed off all three shorthanded situations.

"We didn't have the start we wanted but in the second period, we built momentum with some key shifts," said Smith. "After killing off the penalty at the beginning of the third I thought we really did a good job the rest of the way, despite having two more penalties to kill (at 7:18 and 9:39 of the final period),"

Deguire, who was making her 21st start in 22 league and playoff games, turned away 11 of 14 shots faced in 29:57 minutes before Hadwen, a neurological science sophomore from Ottawa, took over and was credited with the win in her first-ever playoff appearance.

"It's tough for a second-year goalie to go into that situation but she showed a lot of character," noted Smith. "I don't think she was nervous at all, I called her number on the bench and she jumped on the ice. She played aggressively and had a good first save, which is what we wanted, The team did a really good job of being there for her, clearing the rebounds and boxing bodies out."

Concordia's fifth-year netminder Katherine Purchase blocked 23 of 27 shots faced and was saddled with the loss.

McGill returns to the ice on Feb. 28, at CEPSUM Arena for Game 1 of the league championship series against the No.2 ranked Carabins.  Game 2 will be played on Saturday, Mar. 3 at McConnell Arena (2 p.m.). If a deciding game is necessary, it will return to CEPSUM on Sunday, Mar. 4 at 4 p.m.

"We talked briefly in the room about going to nationals at PEI but we won't mention it again. Our focus now is preparing for our first shift on Thursday night against Montreal," said Smith. "They are undefeated at home this year (11-0) and we'd like to challenge that. We're peaking at the right time, playing good hockey with impressive structure and energy."
