OTTAWA – Goaltender
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., made 26 saves to earn her 60th career win and 20th shutout as No. 3 ranked McGill blanked Carleton 2-0 in RSEQ women's hockey at Ice House Arena, Saturday.
The result marked McGill's 10th consecutive win over the Ravens, improving their head-to-head record to 99-4-1 lifetime in 104 meetings overall.
"It was our first 60-minute game of the regular season," said Martlets bench boss
Peter Smith. "We didn't play a full game last night (in a 3-1 loss to the Carabins). So it was a priority to get out to a good start. Yesterday we were good with the puck but less so without it. Today we played on both sides and that's what it takes to be successful."
Deguire, a 5-foot-8 senior, collected her first win and shutout in three starts this season, improving to 60-42-1 lifetime in 107 career games with the Martlets. She ranks second in both games played and wins among all-time career goalie leaders at McGill and is third in shutouts, sandwiched behind former Canadian Olympians
Charline Labonte (78) and
Kim St-Pierre (27). Labonte posted a 155-16-3 record in 174 games overall, while St-Pierre was credited with a 50-40-12 mark in 103 contests.
The Martlets had a 38-26 edge in shots but failed to solve Ravens goaltender
Alexandra Lehmann until late in the second period. Lehmann eventually turned away 36 of 37 shots in a losing cause as her record dropped to 0-2.
McGill opened the scoring in the dying seconds of the second period, keyed by centre
Shana Walker of North York, Ont., who received a pass from blueliner
Cassidy Bell,
streaked down the left side, and snapped a shot from the top of the faceoff circle. Lehmann made a pad save but
Sidonie Chard of Kingston, Ont., buried the rebound with 95 seconds remaining in the middle frame with what became the game-winning tally.
Rearguard
Emilia Cotter from Toronto., added an empty-netter at 19:19. It was the kinesiology senior's first of the season and eighth career goal overall.
Both teams were unsuccessful on the power-play. McGill was 0-for-4, while Carleton went 0-for-2.
The Martlets evened their record at 1-1-1 while Carleton fell to 0-3-0. Both sides play Ottawa next. McGill hosts the Gee-Gees on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. before Carleton does the on same Nov. 3.
