QUEBEC CITY -- Distance runner
Elizabeth Hirsch of Melrose, Mass., registered a silver-medal finish, as the McGill University women's cross-country squad captured the RSEQ conference championship meet, held on the Plains of Abraham, Saturday.
It marked the team's first league banner since 2016 and 31st Quebec title in 40 years, since the inaugural season in 1980. Long-time McGill mentor
Dennis Barrett was named coach of the year on the women's side.
In the men's division, Laval repeated as conference champs for the ninth straight season, while McGill finished fifth of eight schools.
Elodie DeCoene of the Montreal Carabins edged out Hirsch for the women's title, finishing first of 79 entries, completing the eight-kilometre course in 29 minutes, 37 seconds.
Hirsch, a 21-year-old biology senior finished two seconds behind, followed by Laval's
Aurelie Dubé-Lavoie, who completed the podium with a bronze-medal time of 30:06.
The top seven finishers merited first-team all-star honours, while the next seven runners earned second-team status.
Hirsch has reached the podium in all four of her meets thus far, winning one gold and three silvers. She was joined on the first squad by teammate
Sandrine Veillette, a management junior from Quebec City who finished fourth overall in 30:12.
Meriting second team honours from McGill was
Chloe Fleurent-Gregoire, a science senior from Laval, Que., who placed eighth overall in 30:57, and
Brianna Mendes, a third-year management junior from Bermuda, who placed ninth in 31:01.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Maia Watson (18th, 31:57), an arts sophomore from Victoria, B.C.
The McGill women led all eight teams with 41 points, based on scoring second, fourth, eighth, ninth and 18th. They edged out the Montreal Carabins (44) by only three points. Rounding out the leader board was Laval in third with 50, followed by UQTR (123), Sherbrooke (128), UQAC (196), UQAM (202) and Concordia (219).
On the men's side, Laval won the meet, led by
Jean-Simon Desgagnes, who was first of 92 entries, winning gold in 31:32.
Joining him atop the podium was teammate
Jonathan Tedeschi (31:44) and Sherbrookeès
Thomas Windish (31:50).
Henry Wellenstein was McGill's top runner, finishing 15th overall in 33:53. Other leading results from McGill included
Thomas Csisztu (24th; 35:14),
Noah Elrimawi-Fine (27th; 35:27),
Olivier Cyr (28th; 35:41) and
Jeremy Obrand (32nd; 36:04).
Laval won the eight-team competition with 20 points, followed by Sherbrooke (76), Montreal (85), UQTR (114). McGill (124), UQAM (160), Concordia (195) and UQAC (252).
Next on the schedule is the U SPORTS national championships in Kingston, Ont., Nov. 9.
