MONTREAL -- Four graduates from McGill University were among the honoured members of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic women's hockey team that was inducted, Wednesday, to the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Defenceman Catherine Ward (B.Com '09) and goaltenders Charline Labonté (B.Ed '11, M.SportPsych '15) and Kim St. Pierre (B.Kin '04) were on hand along with Martlets bench boss Peter Smith (B.Ed '79, M.SportPsych '86), who served as an assistant coach with the women's Vancouver 2010 hockey team that won gold, conceding only two goals over the duration of the five game tournament. The team's gold medal game victory (2-0) is the only time in women's Olympic hockey history Team Canada has shut out Team USA.
Also on hand to celebrate with the foursome was Gillian Ferrari of the 2006 Olympic team, who later played for the McGill Martlets and graduated in 2014 with a master's degree in sports psychology.
Other inductees to the Class of 2019 included Émilie Heymans, Alexandre Despatie, Christine Girard, Simon Whitfield, the London 2012 women's soccer team and builders Jack Poole and Randy Starkman and coach Hiroshi Nakamura.
Since 1949, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame has inducted 429 athletes, teams, coaches, and builders in recognition "of their outstanding Olympic achievements and their embodiment of the Olympic values."
