COTE ST. LUC, QUE -- A quartet of pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout as the McGill University baseball team blanked Concordia 8-0 at Gary Carter Field, Wednesday.
The no-hit bid was broken up on a single by right-fielder
Philippe Veilleux, who was batting seventh, in the second inning.
McGill, which had an 8-1 advantage in hits, scored twice in the second inning, then added a pair in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth.
Benji Kaiserman started on the mound for McGill. He lasted three innings, allowing one hit, four walks and striking out four. He was relieved by
Zach Salsburg-Frank, who was credited with the win. He went two innings, striking out two and walking one.
Bobby Finnie and
Sam Greene each pitched one inning out of the bullpen and helped to close it out in relief.
Concordia starter
Caleb Kaufmann took the loss. He went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked five, hit two batters and struck out two. Teammate
Thomas Loubser-Munn pitched the final two innings and gave up three runs on three hits with one walk and a strikeout.
Jared Kersh,
Chester Dixon and
Pierre-Olivier Avoine led the McGill offence with two hits apiece.Kersh was 2-for-3, with a run scored and an RBI.
McGill, which improved to 14-8 overall, will make their fourth trip across the U.S. border this season. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday against the State University of New York at New Paltz, located about 470 kilometres south of Montreal and 130 km north of New York City. The games are slated for Loren Campbell Field at 12 noon and 3 p.m. On Sunday, McGill plays at twin-bill at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.
