AJAX, ONT --
Pierre-Olivier Avoine of Val d'Or, Que., had three hits, scored twice and drove home two more runs as McGill rallied from a four-run deficit with 10 unanswered runs en route to a 10-4 victory over Acadia at the Canadian National Invitational Baseball Tournament, Friday, at the Ajax Sportsplex.
McGill is now 2-0 at the tourney, including a 5-3 victory over Concordia in the opener, earlier in the day. They will conclude the preliminary round against McMaster (0-2) on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Acadia exploded for four runs in the top of the third inning but McGill got one back in the bottom of the third, added three more in the fourth to tie the score at 4-4, then added one in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
McGill, which now has a modest three-game win streak, played errorless ball and outhit the Axemen by an 11-3 margin.
Avoine, a pitcher who started at shortstop, went-3-for-4 with a double from the No.2 spot in the batting order. he was complemented by second baseman
Dominic DeFelice, a senior from Richmond, Mass., who also had a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, three RBIs and one run scored.
Starting pitcher
Cole Millinger, a management sophomore from West Windsor, N.J., collected the win. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound right-hander threw 92 pitches over six innings. He allowed four runs on three hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
Benji Kaiserman pitched the final inning in relief. he allowed one walk and one hit batsman to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
Acadia starter
Greg Mitchell took the loss, allowing nine runs (7 earned) on 10 hits in 5.2 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
The three Axemen hits were scattered over three players, led by first baseman
Nathan McCarthy stroking a three-run homer in the third inning.
